Examining the Concept of Subordination in Spoken L1 and L2 English
This article explores the applications of research on native spoken language into second language learning in the concept of subordination. Second language (L2) learners’ ability to integrate subordinate clauses is considered an indication of higher proficiency (e.g., Ellis & Barkhuizen, 2005; Tarone & Swierzbin, 2009). To let hair be, or to not let hair be? Gender and body hair removal practices in Aotearoa/New Zealand
Research and anecdotal evidence suggest women continue to remove body hair, and there is some evidence for cultural changes in men's hair removal practices. This paper reports on data collected using an online mix-methods survey from 584 New Zealanders between the ages of 18-35 (mean age 26, 48.9% male, 50.6% female). The data demonstrated that substantial proportions of both women and men in Aotearoa/New Zealand remove body hair from many sites.…

Previous accounts largely work with de-contextualised and constructed data and stop short of accounting for the discourse function of verb-second postmodifying structures. The ratio of …

Some Effects of a Foreign Language Classroom on the Development of German Negation
This paper investigates the development of German negation by 42 Scottish classroom learners aged 10–16. The purpose of the study is to establish whether there are any differences between naturalistic and classroom course of development which can be related to the nature of the classroom. In particular, we are interested in the effects of form-focused practice activities in the first few months of instruction which require learners to produce com…

In all, the corpus includes four conversations from each of 64 young adul…
