Using a feminist ethnographic approach, semi-structured interviews with four prominent influactivists reveal how digital platforms serve as both tools for empowerment and arenas for misogynistic abuse. These women face diverse forms of TFGBV, including har…

On her arrival, Rackete was …

  • Discourse, intersectionality, critique: Theory, Methods and Practice

    Eleonora Esposito•ARTICLE•Critical Discourse Studies•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 46

For the past thirty years, Critical Discourse Studies has been consolidating as a form of linguistically-oriented, critical social research which is characterized by a deep interest in actual social issues and forms of inequality, such as racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and sexism, both in terms of the asymmetries between participants in discourse events and their unequal capacity to control how texts are produced, distributed and consumed. Eleonora Esposito, Agata Szypulska•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender-Based Violence•2022

Based on the findings of a study conducted by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), this article examines the main c…

  • The visual semiotics of digital misogyny: Female leaders in the viewfinder

    Eleonora Esposito•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 9

The proliferation of gender-based violence against women in politics (WIP) is increasingly recognized as a global phenomenon of interest. In particular, the new affordances of the Web 2.0 play a crucial role in the use of language, images, and other symbols to marginalize and exclude women as political actors. This paper illustrates the visual semiotics of misogyny against WIP on social media platforms. Two multimodal strategies are inductively i…
