When Formality Is Costly and Informality Is Legal
This paper looks at the extent to which the institutional framework for social insurance (SI) constrains access to contributory schemes, with data from Egypt. We use nationally representative microdata to test how the design results in the exclusion of specific categories of workers. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on women's care work and employment in the Middle East and North Africa

An important contribution of this study is to examine the two main mechanisms by which marriage can affect work: (1) its effect on ever…
Egypt’s reformed social insurance system
In 2019, the Government of Egypt issued a new legal framework for its social insurance system. Aside from providing a unified scheme covering different groups of workers, the new regulation allowed for systemic and parametric reforms that were aimed in large part at addressing the challenge of workers’ low enrolment in social insurance, with an emphasis on informal workers. The reforms reduced the rate of contributions paid by employees and emplo…
The Dynamics of Family Formation and Women’s Work
Assessing the impact of trade reforms on informal employment in Egypt
This paper proposes an empirical investigation of the effect of trade liberalisation on informal employment in Egypt. The effect of trade liberalisation on the informal sector has been widely discussed at both empirical and public policy levels but was never tested empirically in Egypt. Thus, combining a microeconomic data set (the Egyptian Labor Market Panel Survey) with macroeconomic variables (tariffs), we try to assess to what extent trade re…
