  • The promotion club

Open Access•Shuo Chen, Xinyu Fan et al.•ARTICLE•Public Choice•2026

We theoretically and empirically explore club-based promotions in hierarchical organizations. A game-theoretic model shows that strategic ambiguity in promotions—more specifically, an incentive scheme in which only top performers who pass a relative-performance threshold are eligible for promotions—may outperform single-prize tournaments in terms of both effort and leaders’ flexibility over personnel. Selection among threshold passers is independ…

  • Mental Health Literacy, Anxiety, and Insomnia in Chinese Chronically Ill Older Adult‐Caregiver Dyads: Actor‐Partner Interdependence Moderation Model

Open Access•Xinyu Fan, Huiqiong Zheng et al.•ARTICLE•Family Process•2025

Anxiety and insomnia are correlated in older adults and their caregivers, yet the moderating role of mental health literacy (MHL) is unclear. This study aimed to explore dyadic effects of anxiety on insomnia among Chinese chronically ill older adults and family caregivers across age groups and whether MHL moderates these effects. Data came from 1033 dyads of older adults and their family caregivers in China through the Guangdong Mental Health Sur…

To explore the moderating role of dyadic appraisal in the association between dyadic coping and diabetes management efficacy. Two hundred seventy six middle-aged and older couple pairs with one spouse who had diabetes were recruited from 14 community healthcare centers across Guangzhou. The moderating role of dyadic appraisal was investigated using the actor-partner interdependence moderation model. When both couples considered diabetes to be a s…

  • Cultural Contours of Depression: A Socio-political and Ethnographic Analysis

    Open Access•Xinyu Fan•CHAPTER•Proceedings of the 2024 6th…•2024

The essay unpacks the sociopolitical and cultural underpinnings of depression in China, revealing how cultural, historical, and social contexts shape understandings and experiences of mental health.Based on ethnographic methodologies and theoretical frameworks from medical anthropology, this essay will use Arthur Kleinman's concepts of the "local moral world" and illness narratives in attending to culturally particular manifestations of depressio…

  • Starving and deceiving: Are politicians with childhood famine exposure more honest

    Open Access•Shuo Chen, Xinyu Fan et al.•ARTICLE•Public Choice•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Dishonest politicians can jeopardize economic development. How do disasters change politicians’ incentives to lie? We employ a difference-in-differences approach to show that public officials who were exposed to China’s 1959–1961 famine as children (aged 0–6 years) are less likely to manipulate local GDP calculations; the reduction is more significant for officials who were more severely impacted by the disaster. We further reveal that famine-exp…

  • Strategic promotion, reputation, and responsiveness in bureaucratic hierarchies

    Open Access•Xinyu Fan, Feng Yang•ARTICLE•Journal of Theoretical Politics•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 36

While existing studies usually model promotion as a bilateral interaction between promoter and promotee, it is not uncommon that the promoter is under the influence of a third party. For instance, authoritarian rulers may consider how their interactions with local agents change the way that citizens view them. Similarly, a mid-tier officer in a bureaucratic hierarchy often concerns herself with her image in the eyes of her superior when managing …
