  • Perceptions of the Belgian Coast through time

Marylise Schmid, Verolien Cauberghe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Place Management and…•2026

Purpose Opposition to change is a critical barrier for coastal transitions. It is recently argued that such opposition may arise from “climax thinking”, the belief that current landscapes have reached an ideal state and should remain as they are. However, people’s evaluations of place over time (past, present and future) remain understudied, leaving it unknown whether climax thinking is common, whether other evaluations prevail, and what impact t…

  • Workoutathome

Marloes de Brabandere, Ini Vanwesenbeeck et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2024

The present study examines how content of fitfluencers can be employed to improve body satisfaction and intention to exercise among adolescents. Specifically, this experimental study (N = 114 adolescents, age: 16–18) compares the effects of fitfluencer content with instructional captions that contain exercise or workout instructions (as a form of edutainment) with those of self-focused fitfluencer captions that emphasize the fitfluencer’s appeara…

  • How Adolescents Use Social Media to Cope with Feelings of Loneliness and Anxiety During Covid-19 Lockdown

Open Access•Veroline Cauberghe, Verolien Cauberghe et al.•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Behavior and…•2021

Next to physical health problems and economic damage, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and associated lockdown measures taken by governments of many countries are expected to cause mental health problems. Especially for adolescents, who highly rely on social contacts with peers, the prolonged period of social isolation may have detrimental effects on their mental health. Open Access•An-Sofie Claeys, An‐Sofie Claeys et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2014

This paper examines the impact of nonverbal expressions of power by organizational spokespersons during different crisis stages. Study 1 investigates how vocal nonverbal cues express power during crises and how this affects perceptions of spokespersons. The results illustrate that a spokesperson who speaks with a lowered voice pitch, which expresses power, appears more competent than one with a raised voice pitch. Study 2 examines the moderating …

  • Being healthy or looking good? The effectiveness of health versus appearance-focused arguments in two-sided messages

Open Access•Erlinde Cornelis, Veroline Cauberghe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 32

Two experimental studies test the effectiveness of health versus appearance-related arguments in two-sided messages. The first study shows that two-sided messages to discourage suntanning are more effective when using appearance-focused instead of health-focused arguments. Study 2 elaborates on the underlying mechanism and extends the generalization of the results of the first study, by investigating two-sided messages to promote physical exercis…
