“I always know she cannot betray me.” Disclosure of abortion and methods of abortion used in informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya
Despite abortion being stigmatized and legally restricted in Kenya, women still disclose their abortions within their network. Evidence has shown how stigma can influence and regulate individual abortion disclosure decisions and behaviors. This paper seeks to understand why and how women make the decisions to disclose their abortion and the associated methods used. The data are from a qualitative formative study and a respondent-driven sampling s…
Barriers to post-abortion care service provision
Despite several political commitments to ensure the availability of and access to post-abortion care services, women in sub-Saharan Africa still struggle to access quality post-abortion care, and with devastating social and economic consequences. Expanding access to post-abortion care while eliminating barriers to utilization could significantly reduce abortions-related morbidity and mortality. We describe the barriers to providing and utilizing …
Searching for Needles in a Haystack
This study aims to describe the circumstances under which women obtained abortions in two sites, explore more nuanced approaches to classify abortion safety and examine the relationship between safety and self‐reported health outcomes. We analyze data on the most recent abortion or only abortion reported by 551 women in Nairobi slums and 479 women in rural Kaya ages 15–49 years within the three years preceding the study, recruited via respondent‐…
Using Respondent-Driven Sampling to measure abortion safety in restrictive contexts
Background : Due to restrictive laws and limited service provision, globally the majority of induced abortions are unsafe and remain largely undocumented, despite their negative impact on women’s health. \n Objective : The purpose of this study is to test Respondent-Driven Sampling – used previously in HIV research – for abortion, and to measure abortion safety characteristics in the small town of Kaya and surrounding villages (Burkina Faso) and …
Co-created research agenda to support advocacy toward social inclusion for sexual and gender minorities in sub-Saharan Africa
Advocacy actors play a unique role in promoting changes in policy, legal, and social environments for sexual and gender minorities in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, their efforts may be hampered by limited incorporation of evidence because there is a massive gulf between what researchers focus on and what evidence users need. Together with fifty key stakeholders across SSA, we—a team of researchers and policy engagement specialists—co-created…
Cocreated regional research agenda for evidence-informed policy and advocacy to improve adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights in sub-Saharan Africa
box The sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region has one of the poorest adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) indicators, and a multiplicity of structural and sociocultural factors contribute to these poor adolescent SRH outcomes.1–3 Prevailing sociocultural and religious beliefs characterise adolescent sexuality as a taboo.4 5 As a result, interventions or policies aiming to improve adolescent SRH outcomes face significant opposition.6
From the shadows to light. Perceptions of women and healthcare providers of post-abortion care in Burkina Faso
