  • Barriers to Immunotherapy Use Among Patients with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: A Qualitative Analysis

    Open Access•Sara F Milrad, Maria Claros et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2026

Background Individuals who are Black or Hispanic are disproportionately more likely to be diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) than non-Hispanic White (NHW) individuals. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) increase survival across different cancers, including TNBC. However, disparities in the use of ICIs exist across racial and socioeconomic (SES) groups, particularly among patients who are Black or of low SES in comparison to NHW …

Margaret Rosario, Gabriel Gagnon et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2026•References: 16

Sexual identity development (SID) varies for sexual minority individuals, but its scope and implications remain understudied. We examined trajectories or profiles of SID among sexual minority adults and investigated their sociodemographic associations, while being sensitive to sex differences and missing data. Our examination used a United States probability sample of three generations of cisgender sexual minority adults; assessed ages at attaini…

Open Access•Adriana Espinosa, Kathryn Hampton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2024•References: 10

Recent scholarship has highlighted how states differentially restrict the movement of persons who are divergently racialized, gendered, sexualized, abled, and aged. This paper explores the phenomenon of extrajudicial border enforcement—instances where airline officials act on behalf of states to prevent the cross-border movement of marginalized persons. Based on a qualitative analysis of fifty-two cases of failed travel of at-risk lesbian, gay, b…

  • A Psychometric and Relative Importance Evaluation of Health Literacy and Health Consciousness on Covid-19 Preventive Behaviors Among Hispanic Adults

    Open Access•Adriana Espinosa•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2023

Given the COVID-19 pandemic’s disproportionate impact on Hispanic individuals in the United States, research examining modifiable psychosocial correlates of COVID-19 preventive behaviors in this population is warranted. Prior research highlights health literacy and health consciousness as integral for the establishment of health-promoting behaviors. Notwithstanding, very little research has validated theory-based measures for health literacy and …

  • Childhood Experiences and Mental Health of Sexual Minority Adults: Examining Three Models

Margaret Rosario, Adriana Espinosa et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 14

Three models of recalled childhood gender nonconformity (GNC) and maltreatment are proposed to explain disparities in current psychological distress and lifetime suicidality among sexual minority individuals, using a United States probability sample of cisgender lesbian/gay ( n = 701), bisexual ( n = 606), and other (e.g., queer, n = 182) adults. Indirect effects indicated that lesbian/gay individuals were more likely than bisexual individuals to…

  • Latent class analysis of racial microaggressions and institution-specific racial discrimination at a U.S. minority-serving university: Implications for mental health and coping

Open Access•Florence Lui, Adriana Espinosa et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2022

Research has demonstrated that ethnoracially minoritized college students face negative mental health outcomes associated with racism. However, little is known about the intersections between microaggressions and institution-specific racial discrimination, their relationship with psychological distress, and the role of coping in this relationship. An ethnoracially diverse sample of 915 young adults attending an urban minority-serving institution …

  • The Differential Contribution of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Perceived Discrimination on Substance Use among Hispanic Emerging Adults

Adriana Espinosa, Mharisi Bonner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2021

Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are widely documented risk factors for substance use among Hispanic emerging adults. Studies seldom examine whether distinct ACEs differentially relate to substance use in emerging adulthood, and if said association varies in the context of additional stressors disproportionately experienced by Hispanic people. This examination is necessary for understanding the etiology of substance use disorders and related o…

  • Advancing Health Equity through Substance Use Research

Caravella McCuistian, Kathy Burlew et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2021•References: 4

Several health inequities exist among racial/ethnic minoritized populations (REMPs) who use substances including disparities in use patterns, inequities in health and legal consequences of use, as well as in treatment access and effectiveness. To address these inequities, more research is needed to examine the associated factors and identify areas for improving treatment. Divided into three categories, this special issue includes papers that exam…

  • Associations among parental and romantic attachment, personality disorder symptoms, and physical health

Open Access•Margaret Rosario, Adriana Espinosa et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2021•References: 69

The relations of parental and romantic attachment with physical health symptoms and the mediating role of personality disorder symptoms in those relations were examined in an online survey of US young adults. Latent class analysis identified two groups: occasionally sick and healthier. Insecure attachment was related to being occasionally sick and to personality disorder symptoms (poor reality testing, primitive defenses, and diffused identity). …

  • Emotional self-efficacy informs the interrelation between discrimination, ethnic identity and psychotic-like experiences

Adriana Espinosa, Deidre M Anglin et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2020

Race-based discrimination has been identified as a risk factor for psychotic-like experiences (PLE) among immigrant populations of color. Although ethnic identity is theorized to protect against the negative mental health impact of discrimination, empirical confirmation remains mixed. We posit mixed results are in part due to the omission of individual differences in trait emotional self-efficacy, which includes self-perceptions about emotional c…

  • Bicultural identity harmony and American identity are associated with positive mental health in U.S. racial and ethnic minority immigrants

    Aleksandr A Tikhonov, Adriana Espinosa et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2019•Cited by: 14

Perceived compatibility between ethnic and American identities is seemingly important for understanding the relation between national identity and mental health among racial and ethnic minority immigrants. However, longitudinal research designs would help assess causality in the relations found herein. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Trait emotional intelligence, coping, and occupational distress among resettlement workers

    Adriana Espinosa, Adeyinka M Akinsulure-Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2018

Trait emotional intelligence has recently emerged as a negative predictor of work-related distress. However, research that considers the mechanisms underlying the relationship between trait emotional intelligence and distress is lacking, in particular among workers with emotionally intensive occupations. The purpose of this study was to analyze the mediating pathway of coping behaviors in the relations between trait emotional intelligence, and wo…

  • Identity Inclusiveness and Centrality: Investigating Identity Correlates of Attitudes toward Immigrants and Immigration Policies

Open Access•Adriana Espinosa, Rita Guerra et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2018•Cited by: 10•References: 38

Social psychology highlights ingroup identity as an important determinant of intergroup attitudes and relations; however, research has demonstrated that its effects can be positive, negative, or nonexistent depending on how such identity is conceptualized. This research explores how national identity inclusiveness (Study 1) and centrality (Study 2) are associated with immigration related attitudes in school and countrywide settings, respectively.…

  • Direct and Indirect Effects of Cumulative Trauma, PTSD, and Substance Use Disorder on Probability of Arrest Among Lower Income African American and Latina Women

    Open Access•Lesia M Rugla, Adriana Espinosa et al.•ARTICLE•Race and Justice•2018•References: 71

We conducted a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data to examine the association of cumulative trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance use disorder (SUD) with the probability of arrest in a sample of socioeconomically disadvantaged African American and Latino mothers ( N = 158). Results revealed that 34% of the sample had a history of arrest. Logistic regression revealed that cumulative trauma was significantly and positi…
