The influence of weight on psychosocial well-being in diabetes
Weight is a key influence on the psychosocial outcomes for people with diabetes, but it operates differently in type 1 versus type 2 diabetes. By further examining the unique interaction between disease type and weight status we may be able to improve psychological well-being among affected individuals of all sizes
How beliefs about weight malleability and risk perceptions for obesity influence parents' information seeking and feeding
This study surveyed 185 parents to determine whether their perceived risk of their child developing obesity and their implicit theories about the malleability of weight independently and/or interactively predict their child-feeding and pursuit of child-related obesity risk information. Higher risk perceptions were associated with healthier feeding intentions and more information seeking. More incremental (malleable) beliefs predicted healthier fe…
Parents' genetic attributions for children's eating behaviors
Tracing physical behavior in virtual reality
Designing and Assessing Multilevel Interventions to Improve Minority Health and Reduce Health Disparities
Multilevel interventions can be uniquely effective at addressing minority health and health disparities, but they pose substantial methodological, data analytic, and assessment challenges that must be considered when designing and applying interventions and assessment. To facilitate the adoption of multilevel interventions to reduce health disparities, we outline areas of need in filling existing operational challenges to the design and assessmen…
Preferred level of categorization as a strategy to manage chronic illness-related identity among individuals with type 1 versus type 2 diabetes
The present investigation examined social identification management among individuals affected by chronic illness. Because diabetes is a chronic medical condition that consists of a broad superordinate group with two nested subgroups of differing relative status (type 1 versus type 2), it is well-suited to an examination of positive identity management strategies used by individuals with chronic illness. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on …
Validity of assessing child feeding with virtual reality
Identifying eating behavior phenotypes and their correlates
Interest in and reactions to genetic risk information
Framed, Interactive Theory-Driven Texting
More approaches to support weight control are needed, especially among racial minorities who shoulder a disproportionate obesity burden. Using an approach influenced by regulatory fit theory, we conducted a 28-day, 4-arm experimental trial with 89 obese adults recruited from urban, predominantly African American churches to ascertain the efficacy of framed text messages to motivate behaviors conducive to weight loss. Participants were assigned to…
Drivers of overweight mothers' food choice behaviors depend on child gender
Mothers’ guilt responses to children’s obesity risk feedback
This study explored the influence of family health history-based obesity risk feedback for their child on 147 overweight mothers’ guilt related to children’s lifestyle behaviors and passing down a genetic propensity for overweight. Mothers were randomized to receive, or not, obesity risk feedback for their 4- to 5-year-old child and then made food choices for them using a virtual reality–based buffet. Receipt of risk information increased lifesty…
