  • The Moderation Effect of Basic Need Satisfaction in the Relationship Between Drinking Motives and Drinking Outcomes

    Dongjie Wu, Clayton Neighbors•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2026

BACKGROUND: Self-determination theory indicates that three basic psychological needs-autonomy, competence, and relatedness motivate human behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This research examined how basic need satisfaction moderated the relationship between drinking motives and drinking outcomes. METHOD: We analyzed the data from a baseline assessment of a larger project evaluating brief alcohol interventions among heavy-drinking college students. Participan…

  • Drinking to belong

Lucía Masa Rodríguez, Yali Philipson et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Social Psychology•2026

Young adults comprise the group with the highest prevalence of both loneliness and alcohol use, underscoring the importance of developing a deeper insight into this population. Guided by the need to belong and the motivational model of alcohol use, this research evaluates whether students experience alcohol-related problems (e.g. hangovers, missing school or work) in response to a perceived lack of social connection. Specifically, we explore how …

  • An exploratory analysis of drinking motives and alcohol-related problems among Hispanic college students

Sarah J Chavez, Nicole A Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2024

The increase in college enrollment for Hispanic college students warrants increased attention to their health and wellness. Given that a common threat to health and well-being in college students is alcohol use and that Hispanic college students are at elevated risk for alcohol-related problems, it is essential to investigate factors that might lead to heightened alcohol-related problems among this population. The present study is a secondary dat…

  • Drinking to Cope Mediates the Association between Dyadic Conflict and Drinking Behavior

    Open Access•Amanda E F Hagen, Lucía Masa Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic spurred public health measures to reduce viral spread. Concurrently, increases in alcohol consumption and conflict in romantic partnerships were observed. Pre-pandemic research demonstrated a bidirectional association between couples' conflict and drinking. Recent research shows one's drinking motives (proximal predictors of drinking behavior) can influence another person's drinking in close relationships. It is possible tha…

    Mai‐Ly N Steers, Kathryn S Macia et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2021

PURPOSE: Drinking is common among young adult veterans. Previous research has established that veterans' drinking is more strongly associated with veteran versus civilian drinking norms. The present research extends these findings by examining the influence of self-identification both with other veterans and with civilians as moderators of the association between perceived norms and drinking. METHODS: = 3.44) were recruited via Facebook to partic…

  • Personalized Feedback for Smoking and Anxiety Sensitivity

Lorra Garey, Tanya Smit et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2021

Background: Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death and disability globally. Most smokers want to quit, and most make a serious quit attempt each year. Nevertheless, more than 95% of cessation attempters relapse within six months. Thus, alternative interventions are needed to combat this major public health concern. Objective: The current study was conducted to develop and test a smoking treatment among 95 (63.2% male; Mage = …

  • The relationship between sex-related alcohol expectancies and hazardous drinking among persons with HIV disease

Andrew H Rogers, Clayton Neighbors et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2021

Hazardous drinking is a clinically significant problem among persons with HIV (PWH) disease, and is associated with a number of poor outcomes. Hazardous drinking among PWH is associated with risky substance use and sexual behavior, but little work has examined factors that may be associated with greater hazardous drinking and subsequent risky sexual behaviors among PWH. Research among the general population suggests that sex-related alcohol expec…

  • Expressing discrepancies between religious affiliations and drinking reduces drinking intentions

Open Access•Mary M Tomkins, Clayton Neighbors et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Religion and…•2020

The majority of young adults express a religious affiliation. Most widely-practiced religions have some proscriptions against excessive drinking and/or drunkenness. Yet many religious college students engage in drinking in excess of these proscriptions, albeit at lower levels than non-religious students. At present, virtually no empirically-evaluated brief interventions in this population have directly incorporated religious affiliation. OBJECTIV…

The prevalence of hazardous alcohol use among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) is common and related to numerous health problems among individuals in this group. Stigma is associated with hazardous drinking among stigmatized groups, but this relationship has yet to be examined among PLHIV. Moreover, there is a lack of research in identifying the mechanisms underlying this association. Emotion dysregulation is one potential construct that may e…

  • Health-Related Quality of Life Among Homeless Smokers

Lorra Garey, Lorraine R Reitzel et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•2018

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a multidimensional assessment of well-being and health status. Most work in this area assumes that HRQoL is a homogenous construct; however, it is possible HRQoL subgroups may exist. The purpose of the study was to characterize common classes of HRQoL among adult, homeless smokers, a particularly vulnerable group of the larger population, and to evaluate risk and protective factors of HRQoL class membersh…

  • Caregiver alcohol use and mental health among children orphaned by HIV/Aids in South Africa

Charles Jardin, Lochner Marais et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2017

Research in the developed world suggests that parental alcohol use negatively impacts child mental health. However, little research has examined these relations among children in the developing world and no studies to date have done so in the context of AIDS-orphanhood. Therefore, the present study tested the interactive effect of AIDS-orphan status with caregiver alcohol use on child mental health. The sample included 742 children (51.2% female;…

  • Alcohol-induced risky sexual behavior among socially anxious drinkers

    Meredith A Terlecki, Ashley A Richter et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2017

Heavy college drinking is associated with risky sexual behavior. It is therefore important to identify groups that are especially vulnerable to alcohol-influenced sexual risk (e.g., unplanned/unexpected sex). Undergraduates with elevated social anxiety represent one such vulnerable group given that social anxiety is associated with fear of intimacy and heavier drinking in intimate situations and situations with expected negative affect. Drinking …

  • Differential Effects of Acculturation on Drinking Behavior in Chinese- and Korean-American College Students

Christian S Hendershot, Tiara Dillworth et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Studies on Alcohol and…•2008•Cited by: 7

Previous research implicates acculturation as a risk factor for drinking among Asian Americans, but the current findings suggest that protective effects may also exist. Results also indicate that Korean ethnicity is a risk factor particularly in the context of low acculturation. These findings illustrate the need to consider ethnic subgroup differences in drinking rates and in risk and protective factors for alcohol use among Asian Americans

  • Relationships can drive some to drink

Open Access•Lucía Masa Rodríguez, Lindsey M Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 54

How much and why individuals in romantic relationships drink alcohol may be a function of both personal and relational influences. The current research examined factors that predict vulnerability to health-related risky behavior (i.e., drinking to cope and drinking problems) in response to relationship difficulties. We consider the possibility that for individuals whose self-worth is contingently tied to the fluctuations of their relationship, fe…
