Ocean oxygen data
A global coordination and continuous synthesis of interoperable data related to biogeochemical Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) is critically needed to enhance the creation of information products and services to sustainably manage the climate system and ocean health. Among the existing biogeochemical EOVs, data synthesis products—which demonstrate the immense value of data coordination—already exist for carbon-relevant data (e.g. SOCAT, Global O…

Evaluation of new and net community production estimates by multiple ship-based and autonomous observations in the Northeast Pacific Ocean
New production (NP) and net community production (NCP) measurements are often used as estimates of carbon export potential from the mixed layer of the ocean, an important process in the regulation of global climate. Diverse methods can be used to measure NP and NCP, from research vessels, autonomous platforms, and remote sensing, each with its own set of benefits and uncertainties. The various methods are rarely applied simultaneously in a single…
Influence of amino acids on bacterioplankton production, biomass and community composition at Ocean Station Papa in the subarctic Pacific
Bacterioplankton play a central role in carbon cycling, yet their relative contributions to carbon production and removal can be difficult to constrain. As part of the Export Processes in the Ocean from RemoTe Sensing (EXPORTS) program, this study identifies potential influences of bacterioplankton community and dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition on carbon cycling at Ocean Station Papa in August 2018. Surface (5–35 m) bacterioplankton pro…
An operational overview of the EXport Processes in the Ocean from RemoTe Sensing (EXPORTS) Northeast Pacific field deployment
The goal of the EXport Processes in the Ocean from RemoTe Sensing (EXPORTS) field campaign is to develop a predictive understanding of the export, fate, and carbon cycle impacts of global ocean net primary production. To accomplish this goal, observations of export flux pathways, plankton community composition, food web processes, and optical, physical, and biogeochemical (BGC) properties are needed over a range of ecosystem states. Here we intro…
Psychosocial Characteristics of Smokers Interested in Quitting
The purpose was to determine whether psychosocial factors are associated with cessation among smokers interested in quitting. This cross-sectional study included 403 current and former smokers enrolled in a 'Quit and Win' contest. After the quit period, data were collected via a telephone interview at three months post-baseline. Controlling for demographics and secondhand smoke exposure, lower depressive symptoms and more positive partner or frie…
E-Government in New Zealand
Although it has just 4 million people and an economy which is almost entirely based on agriculture, New Zealand has been nominated by the UN as the world's third most advanced in e-government. That might surprise foreigners but not Kiwis, who have always had a rapid uptake of new technology. Leading the country into an electronic world is the E-Government Unit, which is charged with coordinating and integrating e-services across all government ag…
