Professional identity formation, professionalism, leadership and resilience
BACKGROUND: Professional Identity Formation (PIF) is integral to medical education, underpinning how students internalize the values, attitudes, and behaviours expected of physicians. Despite growing interest in PIF, most existing studies rely on qualitative or cross-sectional designs, limiting evidence on how PIF can be assessed quantitatively and tracked longitudinally across medical training. This study aimed to examine whether PIF can be asse…
A cluster randomised crossover trial of single resilience and professionalism tutorials among undergraduate medical students
While we found increased self-efficacy and professionalism scores, these could not be related to the efficacy of respective single tutorials, suggesting that multiple tutorials are required to impact these outcomes. While cross-over designs are feasible to implement, logistical issues may detract from their efficacy. Tutorials could potentially be improved by introducing more interactive learning methods
Medical students, mental health and the role of resilience – A cross-sectional study
BACKGROUND: Medical students have reported high prevalence of mental health difficulties and burnout. However, there are limited investigations examining the association between resilience and these difficulties. We investigated: (1) depression, anxiety, personal and professional burnout, and comorbidity; (2) demographic and education characteristics associated with these outcomes; (3) the association between resilience and these outcomes; and (4…
The StrokeCog study
Objective To describe the process of developing a cognitive rehabilitation intervention for patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) and to describe the intervention prior to evaluation in a pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT). Method: The Medical Research Council framework, ‘Developing and evaluating complex interventions’, was used to develop the cognitive rehabilitation intervention. We conducted a combined analysis of the exi…
‘I hated being ghosted’ – The relevance of social participation for living well with post‐stroke aphasia
BACKGROUND: In the context of increasing incidence of stroke in working aged adults, there is a specific need to explore the views of working aged adults with post-stroke aphasia, whose communication difficulties may result in restricted social participation, loss of employment and changed relationship and parenting roles. This study aimed to explore the perspectives of working aged adults with post-stroke aphasia in relation to social participat…
The Prevalence of Cognitive Impairment on Admission to Nursing Home among Residents with and without Stroke
Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is a common consequence of stroke. Epidemiological evidence indicates that, with an ageing population, stroke and PSCI are likely to increase in the coming decades. This may have considerable implications for the demand for nursing home placement. As prevalence estimates of both cognitive impairment and dementia on admission to nursing home among residents with and without stroke have not yet been compared,…
Perspectives of people with aphasia post-stroke towards recovery & living successfully. A systematic review and qualitative evidence synthesis

Psychometric evaluation of the Casp-19 quality of life scale in an older Irish cohort
Understanding communication of health information
Best practice communication between healthcare professionals and patients involves using quality patient information leaflets (PILs). We assessed medical and physiotherapy students' ( N = 337) ability to appraise the readability, psychology theory content and quality of nine international smoking PILs. Flesch scores ranged from 52.8-79.7% (fairly difficult to fairly easy). Students identified components of the Health Belief Model (84-98%), Theory…
Older people - recipients but also providers of informal care
Data on both the provision and receipt of informal care among populations of older adults are limited. Patterns of both informal care provided and received by older adults in the Republic of Ireland (RoI) and Northern Ireland (NI) were evaluated. A cross-sectional community-based population survey was conducted. Randomly selected older people (aged 65+, n = 2033, mean age (standard deviation): 74.1 years (6.8), 43% men, 68% response rate) provide…
