Māori and Pacific People’s perspectives on Group A Streptococcus vaccine development and delivery in Aotearoa, New Zealand
Aotearoa New Zealand experiences a disproportionately high incidence of Group A Streptococcus (Strep A) disease, particularly acute rheumatic fever (ARF), with Pacific children 80 times and Indigenous Māori children 36 times more likely to develop ARF than children of other ethnicities. This qualitative study explored Māori and Pacific Peoples’ perspectives on Strep A vaccine development. Guided by Kaupapa Māori and Pacific-centred research appro…
Subcutaneous injections of penicillin (SCIP)
Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remain significant health issues for Māori and Pacific communities in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). Subcutaneous injection of penicillin (SCIP) enables injections to be given 10-weekly as an alternative to the standard four-weekly intramuscular (IM) injections. As part of a clinical trial involving participants with ARF who have been on SCIP for at least one year, we aim to explore treatm…
Lifestyle behaviour change following breast cancer
Lifestyle modification can reduce breast cancer recurrence risk and improve quality of life. However, few studies have explored patients' experiences of lifestyle behaviour changes following breast cancer, specifically the information and support received regarding lifestyle changes. To explore this topic, interviews were conducted ( n = 21 women) and analysed thematically based on the Framework Approach. Themes included: Impact of cancer and beh…
Nostalgia, authenticity and wellbeing in autistic and non-autistic young adults
Research in the general population has shown that nostalgia is associated with greater wellbeing through increased authenticity. It is well documented that autistic versus non-autistic individuals experience reduced wellbeing. This is the first study to explore nostalgia in autistic people and whether nostalgia might support the wellbeing of autistic people in the same way as non-autistic. This study had two aims: (i) to explore the autistic expe…
Shouldn’t We Know This Already? UK Women’s Views About Communicating the Link Between Alcohol Consumption and Risk of Breast Cancer
Alcohol is a causal factor in about 10% of breast cancer (BCa) cases, but awareness of this link is low. This study explored how to raise awareness and inform the development of an intervention using the COM-B model (capability, opportunity, motivation, behavior) framework. Eight online focus groups were conducted with 36 participants (6 expert stakeholders, and 30 women aged 40-65). Participants reflected on a package of information about alcohol…
Preceding group A streptococcus skin and throat infections are individually associated with acute rheumatic fever
INTRODUCTION: Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is usually considered a consequence of group A streptococcus (GAS) pharyngitis, with GAS skin infections not considered a major trigger. The aim was to quantify the risk of ARF following a GAS-positive skin or throat swab. METHODS: This retrospective analysis used pre-existing administrative data. Throat and skin swab data (1 866 981 swabs) from the Auckland region, New Zealand and antibiotic dispensing d…
Measuring the Effect of Housing Quality Interventions
In New Zealand, as in many other countries, housing in the private-rental sector is in worse condition than in the owner-occupier housing sector. New Zealand residential buildings have no inspection regime after original construction signoff. Laws and regulations mandating standards for existing residential housing are outdated and spread over a range of instruments. Policies to improve standards in existing housing have been notoriously difficul…
