  • High morbidity and mortality associated with primary bloodstream infections among pediatric patients with cancer at a Guatemalan tertiary referral hospital

Open Access•Sheena Mukkada, Mario Melgar et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Infectious complications remain major contributors to adverse outcomes in patients treated for non-communicable disease, particularly in resource limited settings. We performed a 5-year retrospective study of primary bloodstream infections at a dedicated pediatric oncology center in Guatemala. Two hundred and twelve episodes occurring in 194 unique patients qualified for inclusion. Patients required intensive care unit admission in 55% of episode…

  • Correlates of depression and anxiety among homeless adults with latent tuberculosis infection

Open Access•Dana Rose Garfin, Donald E Morisky et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2022•References: 28

Homeless persons have disproportionate rates of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). LTBI treatment can prevent and reduce active tuberculosis spread. We examined associations between mental health, social support, and perceptions of general health in 50 LTBI-positive, homeless adults enrolled in LTBI treatment. Depression and anxiety prevalence were 40% and 48%, respectively. Depression was negatively associated with general health, positive so…

  • Engaging the Community in Designing a Hepatitis C Virus Treatment Program for Adults Experiencing Homelessness

    Open Access•Adeline M Nyamathi, Sarah Wall et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 58

Despite the availability of cure for hepatitis C virus (HCV), people experiencing homelessness (PEH) are challenged with initiating and completing HCV treatment. The design of culturally sensitive HCV treatment programs is lacking. The objective was to employ community-based participatory research methods to understand perceptions of HCV-positive PEH, and providers, on the design and delivery of a culturally sensitive, nurse-led community health …

  • Deconstructing Building Blocks

Open Access•Brian N Verdine, Roberta Michnick Golinkoff et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2014

This study focuses on three main goals: First, 3-year-olds' spatial assembly skills are probed using interlocking block constructions (N = 102). A detailed scoring scheme provides insight into early spatial processing and offers information beyond a basic accuracy score. Second, the relation of spatial assembly to early mathematical skills was evaluated. Spatial skill independently predicted a significant amount of the variability in concurrent m…

  • Parental numeric language input to Mandarin Chinese and English speaking preschool children

Open Access•Alicia Chang, Alicia H Chang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2011

The present study examined the number-specific parental language input to Mandarin- and English-speaking preschool-aged children. Mandarin and English transcripts from the CHILDES database were examined for amount of numeric speech, specific types of numeric speech and syntactic frames in which numeric speech appeared. The results showed that Mandarin-speaking parents talked about number more frequently than English-speaking parents. Further, the…

  • Gender Biases in Early Number Exposure to Preschool-Aged Children

Open Access•Alicia Chang, Alicia H Chang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2011•References: 39

Despite dramatically narrowing gender gaps, women remain underrepresented in mathematics and math-related fields. Parents can shape expectations and interests, which may predict later differences in achievement and occupational choices. This study examines children’s early mathematical environments by observing the amount that mothers talk to their sons and daughters (mean age 22 months) about cardinal number, a basic precursor to mathematics. In…
