Identifying and selecting outcome measures for the children and families domestic abuse core outcome set
This work is the next step toward the development of a child and family-focused DA-COS, that we hope will enable co-ordinated outcome measurement within and between practice and research. Further work is needed to adapt and evaluate the selected OMI as well as to develop a new tool to measure freedom to go about daily life . Work is needed to support the implementation of the DA-COS, ensure its applicability to families with diverse needs or from…
Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA) Reactivity and Developmental Delay in the Preschool Years
Children with developmental delay are more likely than their typically developing peers to experience emotional dysregulation. Given that there is evidence that respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) reactivity indexes emotion regulation, which in turn tracks motor, language, and cognitive development across the early years, RSA reactivity should develop accordingly in that period and differ by developmental status. The present study therefore compar…
Flattening the curve
The COVID-19 pandemic had negative consequences for individuals in the United States, especially Black and low-income populations. At the start of the pandemic, efforts were made to stop the spread of COVID-19 through recommending person-level, health protective behaviors (e.g. mask wearing), but minimal research has explored what factors were related to Black and low-income individuals' engagement in these behaviors. The current study sought to …
The longitudinal association of adverse events and working memory among preschoolers
Results indicated that at the individual level, when controlling for stable covariates, frequency of adverse life event exposure and WM abilities were unrelated to subsequent frequency of adverse event exposure and WM abilities. Findings suggest that WM may continue to develop typically, in the preschool years, despite exposure to adverse life events. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
Maneuvering through life with positivity
Adversity Interpreted
Although evidence suggests that individuals’ appraisals (i.e., subjective interpretations) of adverse or traumatic life events may serve as a mechanism accounting for differences in adversity exposure and psychological adjustment, understanding this mechanism is contingent on our ability to reliably and consistently measure appraisals. However, measures have varied widely between studies, making conclusions about how best to measure appraisal a c…
Adding fuel to the fire? Examining exposure to potentially stressful or traumatic events before and during the Covid-19 pandemic in low-income, Black families
Among low-income, African American/Black individuals with a history of exposure to PSTEs, additional PSTEs experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic may not contribute significantly to general mental health functioning above and beyond pre-COVID-19 PSTE exposures. Taken together, research on PSTE exposure from the pandemic should make attempts to account for lifetime PSTE exposure to most accurately evaluate current mental health concerns, especia…

Spirituality and its relation to mental health outcomes
The effects of spirituality and youth relationships with others on internalizing, externalizing, and adaptive outcomes were examined in a sample of 159 youth between the ages of 8 and 21 in foster or residential care. Indirect effects of direct coping and perceived social support on the relations between these factors and youth outcomes were examined. Preliminary analyses indicated a significant relation between youth spirituality and adaptive ou…

Mental Health Outcomes for Youth Living in Refugee Camps
Currently, there are approximately 10.8 million child refugees worldwide. Youth living in refugee camps face a wide range of difficulties placing them at risk for trauma exposure and negative mental health outcomes. However, little is known about the mental health functioning of these youth. The present review provides a systematic review of mental health outcomes for refugee/displaced youth residing in refugee camps. Twenty studies were included…

Social support provisions as differential predictors of adaptive outcomes in young adolescents
Social support provisions were examined in relation to negative life events, adaptive skills, hope, and grade point average in a sample of 103 inner‐city youth (ages 11–14). Analyses focused on seven support provisions: social integration, attachment, guidance and information, reliable alliance, reassurance of worth, nurturance, and instrumental support. For boys, the provision of guidance and information was most strongly related to adaptive ski…

Testing the Compensatory and Immunity Models of Children's Adaptive Behaviors
The present article examines the relations of negatively appraised and total life events and potential protective factors with adaptive behavior in 432 children (ages 8-12). Appraisal and protective factors were hypothesized to moderate the relation between stress exposure and adaptive behavior. Several significant interactions emerged between events rated as negative and variables reflecting social support, positive family environment, and intel…
