Strategies to reach, involve, and maintain underserved populations in health intervention research
BACKGROUND: Certain population subgroups, including people with lower socioeconomic status, racial and/or ethnic minorities, and individuals with lower literacy skills, face greater health challenges and participate significantly less in health intervention research. This leads to non-generalizable findings and interventions that fail to meet their needs. Despite the recognition of barriers, such as mistrust, limited access, and communication cha…
Key contextual factors in implementing whole-school health promotion within Dutch schools
Purpose Contextual factors can influence the implementation of whole-school health promotion and compromise its impact among students. This study aimed to identify key (combinations of) contextual factors in the implementation of whole-school health promotion at Dutch primary, secondary and secondary vocational schools. Design/methodology/approach Forty-three schools with either a high or low degree of implementation were selected. Data were coll…
Community and behavior maintenance
Community factors may play a key role in facilitating effective diabetes self-management and sustained behavior change. We investigated whether community factors are related to behavior maintenance outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes participating in a group-based walking intervention. We examined if changes in walking behavior, diabetes self-management and health outcomes are related to perceived social support and diabetes self-efficacy, an…
Promoting informed decision making about maternal pertussis vaccination
Introduction: Maintaining and enhancing vaccine confidence continues to be a challenge. Making an informed decision not only helps to avoid potential future regret but also reduces susceptibility to misinformation. There is an urgent need for interventions that facilitate informed decision-making about vaccines. This paper describes the systematic development of two interventions designed to promote informed decision making and indirectly, accept…
When and why do people change their minds in favor of vaccination? Longitudinal analyses of switching Covid-19 vaccination preferences
A majority of initially hesitant people changed their minds about vaccination during the pandemic. Preference switches in favor of vaccination were most strongly associated with beliefs about the vaccine's efficacy in preventing illness. This study underlines the importance of providing up-to-date, balanced information and decisional support for people to weigh the benefits and risks of getting vaccinated versus not getting vaccinated
Fidelity, adaptation and integration of whole-school health promotion within Dutch schools
Implementing comprehensive health promotion programs in the school setting can be challenging, as schools can be considered complex adaptive systems. As a first step towards understanding what works in improving implementation for which schools and under which conditions, this study aimed to examine the degree of implementation of health promoting school (HPS) programs, in terms of five dimensions of fidelity (adherence, dose, participant respons…
Development of Long Live Love +, a school-based online sexual health programme for young adults. An intervention mapping approach
This paper describes the development of a Dutch online programme called Long Live Love+ focusing on positive, coercion-free relationships, contraception use, and the prevention of STIs, using the Intervention Mapping (IM) approach. All six steps of the approach were followed. Step 1 confirmed the need for a sexual health programme targeting young people aged 15 and over enrolled in higher level secondary education. Step 2 resulted in the producti…
Cultural tailoring to promote hepatitis B screening in Turkish Dutch
UNLABELLED: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections are an important health problem in Turkish migrants in the Netherlands. This study describes the effectiveness of a culturally tailored internet intervention promoting HBV screening in Turkish migrants. METHODS: Turkish migrants, aged 16-40 years old, could participate in an online intervention offering either: (i) behaviourally plus culturally tailored (BCT) information; (ii) behaviourally tailored …
Differential effects of the computer-tailored FATaintPHAT programme on dietary behaviours according to sociodemographic, cognitive and home environmental factors
Objective To explore whether the effects on dietary behaviours of a computer-tailored intervention aimed to prevent excessive weight gain among adolescents, FATaintPHAT, were moderated by sociodemographic, cognitive and home environmental factors. Design A two-group cluster randomized trial. Potential moderation of the outcome measures (consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, snacks, fruits and vegetables) was studied by gender, education level…
Social-Cognitive and Socio-Cultural Predictors of Hepatitis B Virus-Screening in Turkish Migrants, the Netherlands
Development and evaluation of a structured programme for promoting physical activity among seniors with intellectual disabilities
This paper provides insight into the development and content of a theory-driven intervention aimed at behavioural change in a population with a low intellectual level. Its evaluation design is described. The programme's applicability to other populations is discussed

Clustering of drinker prototype characteristics
Prototypes (social images) have been shown to influence behaviour, which is likely to depend on the type of image. Prototype evaluation is based on (un)desirable characteristics related to that image. By an elicitation procedure we examined which adjectives are attributed to specific drinker prototypes. In total 149 young Dutch adults (18–25 years of age) provided adjectives for five drinker prototypes: abstainer, moderate drinker, heavy drinker,…
Development of a culturally tailored Internet intervention promoting hepatitis B screening in the Turkish community in the Netherlands
Hepatitis B virus infections are an important health problem in the Turkish community in the Netherlands. Screening for hepatitis B should be promoted through public health interventions, which take into account the socio-cultural and behavioural determinants that influence screening. The Intervention Mapping protocol was used to develop a culturally tailored Internet intervention for first-generation Turkish immigrants in Rotterdam, aged 16-40 y…

Perceived risk, anxiety, and behavioural responses of the general public during the early phase of the Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in the Netherlands
Decreasing trends over time in perceived severity and anxiety are consistent with the reality: the clinical picture of influenza turned out to be mild in course of time. Although (inter)national health authorities initially overestimated the case fatality rate, the public stayed calm and remained to have a relatively high intention to comply with preventive measures

Action-specific Cognitions of Planned and Preparatory Behaviors of Condom Use among Dutch Adolescents
Many adolescents fail to use condoms, even when they are motivated to do so. An important reason for their failure to use condoms is that they do not prepare themselves for potential sexual encounters. The present study examined the circumstances under which Dutch adolescents were likely to prepare themselves for condom use (buying and carrying). In a sample of 399 secondary school students, including students with and without sexual experience, …
Sexual Decision-Making in HIV-Positive Men Who Have Sex with Men
Determinants of intended condom use with steady and casual sex partners were examined among Dutch HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) (N = 296). Given the proposition that safer sex behavior among HIV-positive people is a form of prosocial behavior, the present study extended the general framework of the Theory of Planned Behavior with Schwartz's norm-activation theory and tested the assumption that personal norms would mediate the effec…

A pre-post test follow-up design was used to test the effects of a systematically developed photo-novella (Laduma) on knowledge, attitudes, communication and behavioural intentions with respect to sexually transmitted infections, after a single reading by 1168 secondary school learners in South Africa. The reading resulted in an increase in knowledge on the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), change in attitude to condom use and tow…
Sexuality and Sexual Risk Behavior in HIV-Positive Men Who Have Sex With Men
The purpose of this study was to examine the psychological processes pertaining to sexuality and sexual risk behavior among HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM). The authors analyzed transcripts of 30 semistructured interviews. Findings suggest that sexual problems in HIV-positive MSM might be primarily caused by the perceived risk of transmitting HIV to others. Furthermore, safer sexual behavior seems to be related to feelings of persona…
Intervention Mapping
Evidence-based health promotion programmes are based on empirical data and theory. While a broad range of social and behavioural science theories are available, the actual application of these theories in programme design remains a real challenge for health promotion planners. Intervention Mapping describes a protocol for the development of theory- and evidence-based health promotion programmes. It provides guidelines and tools for the selection …

The additional value of anticipated regret and psychopathology in explaining intended condom use among drug users
In this study we examine determinants of intended condom use with casual and steady sex partners among drug users. Our aim was to find out whether anticipated regret and psychopathology represent additional factors in explaining condom use behaviour, on top of the constructs defined in traditional psychosocial models of behaviour. A questionnaire measuring intentions, attitude, beliefs, personal norm, subjective norm, descriptive norm, self-effic…
