Going Hand-in-Hand”: Connections Between Women's Prostitution and Substance Use
Little is known about the impact of prostitution involvement on women's substance use and recovery. Interpretive phenomenological data analysis was used to analyze transcribed, in-depth interviews conducted with 14 women recruited from a Midwestern program providing prostitution-specific services. Living With Stigma: Women’s Experiences of Prostitution and Substance Use
Interpretive phenomenology was used to analyze interviews with 14 women who were recruited from a Midwestern program that provides prostitution-specific services. The participants described day-to-day experiences living with labeling, violence, and discrimination that were directed at them because of their involvement in prostitution and substance use. Findings are presented from one site in a federal study of services for women who have co‐occurring mental health and substance use problems and histories of physical or sexual abuse. Among sampled women with two or more publicly funded substance abuse or mental health treatment episodes in 1998, one‐third reported co‐occurring mental health and substance use problems.
