The various solutions proposed would all involve a strengthening of psychiatry's identity as essentially ‘applied neuroscience’. Recent years have seen an international move towards home treatment of acute mental health difficulties. This has been based upon trial data which do little to develop understanding of how or why this approach is as effective as it seems to be. The referral letter is a key instrument in moving patients from primary to secondary care services. Consequently, the circumstances in which a referral should be made and its contents have been the subject of clinical guidelines. This article is based on a project that demonstrated that physicians do not adhere to clinical guidelines when referring patients to secondary mental health services. Inequalities in Mental Health: Models and Explanations
English There is a widely held, and influential view, that there is a causal relationship between mental ill-health and social deprivation. This article discusses these views from genetic and sociological perspectives.
