Exploring breast health practices of post-menopausal women
In light of the contention surrounding breast health practices, the research aimed to explore post-menopausal women's experiences of such practices. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in July and August 2015 with 13 Australian women aged 54-74 years. Data were analysed thematically. Participants deemed their engagement with breast health practices as the 'right' thing. However, engaging in these 'right' practices appeared to be fostered by…
A phenomenological exploration of the childfree choice in a sample of Australian women
Choosing not to have children is considered a deviation from cultural norms, particularly the dominant pronatalist discourse; this is especially so for women. However, little research has documented the experience of Australian women who have consciously chosen to remain childless. Ten voluntarily childfree women participated in unstructured interviews about their choice and its ramifications. The data analysis revealed three broad themes - the e…
Critiquing the school community
Schools are traditionally seen as responsible for the educational outcomes of our children. However, schools also play an important role in the development of aspects such as self‐efficacy, participation, competence and self‐determination. As schools are often run as societies rather than communities, they offer little opportunity for these attributes (self‐efficacy, participation, competence and self‐determination) to develop. Forty‐six children…
Relationships between quality of life, spiritual well-being, and psychological adjustment styles for people living with leukaemia
This paper reports on the relationships between quality of life, spiritual well-being, and psychological adjustment styles for people living with leukaemia. Participants were 40 adults (26 women and 14 men) aged between 22 and 80 years living with acute or chronic leukaemia in Western Australia. Participants completed three scales measuring spiritual well-being (FACIT-Sp-12-C Version 4; Cella, 1997Cella, D. 1997. “Functional Assessment of Chronic…
Young people's perceptions and experiences of leaving high school early
Research suggests it is important for students to feel a sense of belonging to their school. Students who do not belong at school often attempt to satisfy this need through membership in antisocial groups, or they drop out from school altogether. The current study explored the perceptions and experiences of the school context held by young people who have left school early. Twelve young people aged 16–19 years were interviewed on their experience…
A critical exploration of the school context for young adolescents completing primary education
Many schools have adopted relational approaches to attend to the social context in which learning transpires. More recently however, such approaches and their supporters have been criticized for not examining the school context in its entirety and the student experience within this context. The current research sought to critically explore young adolescents' experiences within the context of their school. Fifteen year seven students in an Austral…
Inferring Australian children's sense of community
Sense of community (SOC) has been found to be a predictor of adult well-being and psychological health. Recent research has begun to explore adolescents' SOC. However, there is a dearth of research on the meaning children attach to their community and the development of their SOC, despite its potential for providing an understanding of important aspects of children's lives. Conversational interviews were conducted in schools with 46 children aged…
