  • The relationship of tobacco and alcohol use with ageing self-perceptions in older people in Ireland

    Open Access•Amanda Villiers‐Tuthill, Amanda Villiers-Tuthill et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

The relationship between ageing perceptions, smoking and drinking is complex. Altering perceptions of ageing may be a useful intervention target aimed at facilitating engagement in preventative health behaviours in older people

  • The effects of perceived stress on biological parameters in healthcare professionals: A systematic review

Open Access•Karen Dawe, Anthony Montgomery et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2016

We synthesised evidence on biological correlates of psychological stress in hospital-based healthcare professionals, and examined whether there was evidence of consistent biological changes. Electronic databases were searched for empirical studies; 16 articles (0.6%) met the inclusion criteria. Evidence of a relationship between indices of psychological stress and biological parameters was limited and inconsistent. There was some evidence of a co…

  • Systematic Review and Individual Patient Data Meta-Analysis of Sex Differences in Depression and Prognosis in Persons With Myocardial Infarction: A MINDMAPS Study

Frank Doyle, Hannah Mcgee et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2015

  • Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Impact of Depression on Subsequent Smoking Cessation in Patients With Coronary Heart Disease: 1990 To 2013

  • The contribution of illness perception to psychological distress in heart failure patients

    Open Access•Kàren Morgan, Amanda Villiers‐Tuthill et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2014

The influences on the psychological well-being of heart failure (HF) patients have received limited attention. Illness perceptions are a specific set of cognitive representations that have been shown to predict health-related outcomes in other patient groups. This study sought to explore the role of illness perceptions in the psychological well-being of HF patients by creating a profile of illness perceptions in HF and examining their relations w…

  • Differential Predictive Value of Depressive Versus Anxiety Symptoms in the Prediction of 8-Year Mortality After Acute Coronary Syndrome

Fatima Doyle, Frank Doyle et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2012

OBJECTIVE: Both depression and anxiety have been associated with poor prognosis in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, certain symptoms and how they are measured may be more important than others. We investigated three different scales to determine their predictive validity. METHODS: Patients with ACS (N = 598) completed either the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scales (HADS-A, HADS-D; n = 316) or the Beck Depression Inventory-…

  • The clustering of health behaviours in Ireland and their relationship with mental health, self-rated health and quality of life

Open Access•Mary C Conry, Kàren Morgan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

The current study identifies discernible patterns of lifestyle behaviours in the Irish population which are similar to those of our European counterparts. Healthier clusters (Former Smokers, Temperate and Healthy Lifestyle) reported higher levels of energy vitality, lower levels of psychological distress, better self-rated health and better quality of life. In contrast, those in the Multiple Risk Factor cluster had the lowest levels of energy and…

  • Why don't young women go for Chlamydia testing? A qualitative study employing Goffman's stigma framework

Myles Balfe, Ruairi Brugha et al.•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2010

Many women who might be at risk of having the sexually transmitted infection (STI) Chlamydia trachomatis either delay going, or do not go, for testing. We aimed to examine the factors that either prevent or discourage Irish young women from going for Chlamydia testing. We conducted in-depth interviews with 35 women in the Republic of Ireland who were between 18 and 29 years of age. Accounts were analysed using Goffman’s stigma framework. Study re…

  • Temporal trends in misclassification patterns of measured and self-report based body mass index categories - findings from three population surveys in Ireland

Open Access•Frances Shiely, Ivan J Perry et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

BMI values based on self-reported determinations of height and weight in population samples are underestimating the true prevalence of the obesity epidemic and this underestimation is increasing with time. The decreased sensitivity and consistently high specificity scores in the obese category across time, highlights the limitation of self-report based BMI classifications and the need for simple, readily comprehensible indicators of obesity

  • Reducing health risk in family members of patients with type 2 diabetes: Views of first degree relatives

Open Access•David L Whitford, Heather Mcgee et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

A role for patients with type 2 diabetes in discussing health risk in their family appears to be acceptable to many relatives. Discussion of risk and interventions to reduce health risk with their relatives should be encouraged in patients with type 2 diabetes

  • Where do young Irish women want Chlamydia-screening services to be set up? A qualitative study employing Goffman's impression management framework

    Open Access•Myles Balfe, Ruairi Brugha et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 14

  • Do consultation charges deter general practitioner use among older people? A natural experiment

    Open Access•Richard Layte, Anne Nolan et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2009•Cited by: 8•References: 18
