Testing the nightmare cognitive arousal processing model
Results replicate earlier research which posits that PSA and SOL play a role in triggering the occurrence of posttrauma nightmares. It should be noted that the sample was relatively small, warranting cautious interpretation of results. However, when taken together with the findings of the replicated study, results could suggest the plausibility of therapies targeting presleep cognitions, SOL, and presleep arousal in the treatment of posttrauma ni…
Examining the Factor Structure of the Posttraumatic Checklist for Civilians
The Posttraumatic Checklist for Civilians (PCL-C) is one of the most common tools used to assess PTSD among civilian populations. However, the underlying factor structure of the PCL-C remains under examined, with the most recent research relying on small samples with limited generalizability. Thus, the present study used exploratory and confirmatory techniques in a large North American college student sample to investigate the factor structure of…
Massage on experimental pain in healthy females
This randomized controlled study evaluated the effect of massage on affect, relaxation, and experimental pain induced by electrical stimulation. Participants were 96 healthy women ( M age = 20.13 ± 5.93 years; 84.4% White) randomly assigned to a 15-minute no-treatment control, guided imagery, massage or massage plus guided imagery condition. Multilevel piecewise modeling revealed no group differences in pain intensity, threshold, or tolerance. Th…
The Mediating Role of Secular Coping Strategies in the Relationship Between Religious Appraisals and Adjustment to Chronic Pain
The Effectiveness of a Hope Intervention in Coping with Cold Pressor Pain
Hope has been correlated with greater pain tolerance and thresholds and less reported pain severity. The present study investigated the effectiveness of a brief hope-based intervention involving guided imagery and skills instruction aimed at enhancing pain coping skills among university students performing the cold pressor task. The intervention resulted in increased hope among females and increased pain tolerance in all participants. The interve…

Impact of Two Types of Expectancy on Recovery From Total Knee Replacement Surgery (TKR) in Adults With Osteoarthritis
This study examines the impact of 2 classes of psychological variables--expectancies for the future and self-efficacy--on recovery of function and reduction in symptomatology among individuals seeking total knee replacement surgery (TKR). The authors collected outcome measures (SF-36, WOMAC, Clinician assessments) prior to surgery, 4-6 weeks after surgery, and 6 months postsurgery for surgery patients and controls. Linear trend analyses by group …
