  • Spatial arrangement of biogenic reefs alters boundary layer characteristics to increase risk of microplastic bioaccumulation

Open Access•Hyee Shynn Lim, Alexander Fraser et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Microplastics are now synonymous with human impacts on the environment and as a threat to marine organisms. Numerous taxa are at risk from microplastics including commercially valuable bivalves as seafood, which are also disproportionately important as biogenic reef-forming species that enhance biodiversity such that they are commonly protected under conservation actions. As a sessile filter-feeding organism, bivalves are highly susceptible to mi…

  • Statistical Models for Unsupervised, Semi-Supervised, and Supervised Transliteration Mining

    Open Access•Hassan Sajjad, Helmut Schmid et al.•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2017•References: 2

We present a generative model that efficiently mines transliteration pairs in a consistent fashion in three different settings: unsupervised, semi-supervised, and supervised transliteration mining. The model interpolates two sub-models, one for the generation of transliteration pairs and one for the generation of non-transliteration pairs (i.e., noise). The model is trained on noisy unlabeled data using the EM algorithm. During training the trans…

  • It might hurt, but still it's good

Open Access•Louise Larkin, Norelee Kennedy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2017•References: 33

Many people who have rheumatoid arthritis report low levels of physical activity. We conducted 17 interviews with people who have rheumatoid arthritis to gain insight into how they view physical activity and to explore how their levels of activity may be increased. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Four main themes were generated: being active, barriers and facilitators, information and advice, and support…

  • The Operation Sequence Model—Combining N-Gram-Based and Phrase-Based Statistical Machine Translation

    Open Access•Nadir Durrani, Helmut Schmid et al.•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In this article, we present a novel machine translation model, the Operation Sequence Model (OSM), which combines the benefits of phrase-based and N-gram-based statistical machine translation (SMT) and remedies their drawbacks. The model represents the translation process as a linear sequence of operations. The sequence includes not only translation operations but also reordering operations. As in N-gram-based SMT, the model is: (i) based on mini…

  • Knowledge Sources for Constituent Parsing of German, a Morphologically Rich and Less-Configurational Language

    Open Access•Alexander Fraser, Helmut Schmid et al.•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2012•References: 1

We study constituent parsing of German, a morphologically rich and less-configurational language. We use a probabilistic context-free grammar treebank grammar that has been adapted to the morphologically rich properties of German by markovization and special features added to its productions. We evaluate the impact of adding lexical knowledge. Then we examine both monolingual and bilingual approaches to parse reranking. Our reranking parser is th…

  • Measuring Word Alignment Quality for Statistical Machine Translation

    Open Access•Alexander Fraser, Daniel Marcu•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 1

Automatic word alignment plays a critical role in statistical machine translation. Unfortunately, the relationship between alignment quality and statistical machine translation performance has not been well understood. In the recent literature, the alignment task has frequently been decoupled from the translation task and assumptions have been made about measuring alignment quality for machine translation which, it turns out, are not justified. I…
