Reflecting on reflective practice: Issues, possibilities and guidance principles
Reflection is a foundational concept and practice across the higher education sector, recognised for its role in supporting student learning and professional development. This comment paper frames our conceptualisation of reflective practice with a definition and declares its underpinning assumptions. Our review of reflective practice through the pages of HERD reveals studies contributing new knowledge about the levels and assessment of reflectio…
Applying the principles of triage to support the rapid transition to online learning during the pandemic
In the higher education sector, military academies operate in environments that differ from university campuses. Like other institutions, military academies had to manage changes to learning and teaching in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This required an approach, a model, that acknowledges and aligns with the needs of a military academy. Using a case study approach, the changes at one faculty at an Australian military academy undergoing a ra…
Enabling leadership capacity for higher education scholarship in learning and teaching (Sotl) through action research
Action research (AR) offers an ideological fit with the culture and the work of the academy - they share a culture of collegiality, evidence- and theory-based practice, and a focus on reflection and evaluation to inform change and innovation. An AR approach and methodology are also integral to the development of leadership capacity for learning and teaching. This paper focuses on a distributed leadership approach for the Scholarship of Teaching a…
What is unique about high performing students? Exploring personality, motivation and competitiveness
The novel variable of competitiveness is explored to determine whether it has a role in differentiating high performing students from others. While the Big Five personality traits and motivation have been well-researched in relation to academic performance, the concept of competitiveness has yet to receive such attention. The competitiveness of business students (n = 226) was investigated in tandem with personality traits and motivation. Four aca…

Demonstrating the impact of a distributed leadership approach in higher education
Higher education is under pressure to advance from a singular focus on assessment of outputs (measurements) to encompass the impact (influence) of initiatives across all aspects of academic endeavour (research, learning and teaching, and leadership). This paper focuses on the implications of this shift for leadership in higher education. Demonstrating the impact of leadership in higher education requires taking a step beyond measuring the skills,…
A distributed leadership change process model for higher education
The higher education sector operates in an increasingly complex global environment that is placing it under considerable stress and resulting in widespread change to the operating context and leadership of higher education institutions. The outcome has been the increased likelihood of conflict between academics and senior leaders, presaging the need for more engaged and broader approach to leadership. Based on empirical research into the Australi…
Project evaluation in higher education: A study of contextual issues
This paper reports on the second phase of a wider study on evaluation of locally funded learning and teaching projects in higher education. A review of the extant literature in this area shows that there is little evidence of the extent to which the alignment between theory and practice, or praxis, of such evaluation is achieved. The first phase established that the project leader's perception and conceptualisation of evaluation can inhibit achie…

A conceptual approach for blended leadership for tertiary education institutions
Over the last 20 years, the tertiary education sector has adopted new administrative management approaches, with the aim of improving accountable and strategic focus. Over the same period, the question of how to build leadership capacity to improve learning and teaching and research outcomes has led to discussion on what constitutes academic leadership. While both these advances are needed, what is missing is integration between the two such that…

A model for higher education policy review: The case study of an assessment policy
The development of a standards-based assessment policy represented a significant cultural shift in assessment practice at one university. Concurrently, the implementation of a policy framework represented a significant procedural shift in policy development and review. The assessment policy was the first policy scheduled to be reviewed through the new framework, specifically in recognition of the pivotal role of assessment to the credibility of q…
Distributed leadership: A Collaborative Framework for Academics, Executives and Professionals in Higher Education
New models of leadership are needed for the higher education sector to continue to graduate students with leading edge capabilities. While multiple theories of leadership exist, the higher education sector requires a less hierarchical approach that takes account of its specialised and professional context. Over the last decade the sector has explored new leadership approaches based on public and private sector models accompanied by an increase in…
The English in Rome, 1362–1420: Portrait of an Expatriate Community
Centred on a study of the early archives of the Venerabile Collegio Inglese in Rome, the predecessor of the English College of today, this book is more than a study of the beginnings of English institutions in Rome. It attempts to place the English community there between 1362, when the first English hospice for poor people and pilgrims was founded, and 1420 in its political, commercial and religious setting. It includes a portrait of a group of …

Prehistoric soil and water detention structures (gabarbands) at Phang, Sindh Kohistan, Pakistan: An adaptation to environmental change
Five gabarbands (dams), components of integrated soil and water conservation systems, were investigated in the arid region of Sindh Kohistan. The dams are associated with two prehistoric Kot Dijian settlements, Phang and Kohtrash (3200–2800 B. C.). The dams were constructed with relatively permeable materials. Three of the dams, South, East, and North, close off water gaps and a strike valley, respectively, to form a detention basin. The West Dam…

The Development of Open Fields in the Central Vale of York: A Reconsideration
Despite the structural complexity of open field layouts in the central Vale of York in the sixteenth century, there is evidence to suggest that tenurial units were laid out in a very ordered fashion. In this respect, they closely resembled arrange- ments found further east, on the Yorkshire Wolds. A relation- ship is observed between the number of holdings in the fields in the sixteenth century, and the Domesday fiscal assessment. The implication…

Open Field Structure and Landholding Arrangements in Eastern Yorkshire
This paper examines a number of aspects of the open field system of agriculture in eastern Yorkshire. In particular, attention is focused upon the relationship between field layout and the traditional units of landholding. The evidence suggests that in both the Yorkshire Wolds and in the Vale of York, holdings were regularly laid out, and that numbers of holdings remained stable for long periods. There is a strong possibility that the fields were…
