Winchester Diocese under John Stratford, 1323–1333
The intention of this article is to examine the principal features of John Stratford's Winchester episcopal register (Hampshire Record Office, 21M65/A1/5), recently edited for the Surrey Record Society, and hence to consider Stratford's reputation as a diocesan bishop insofar as this is determinable. Frequent absences on royal business, often abroad, are meticulously recorded, necessitating competent ‘central administration’ and a well-qualified …

The Durford Cartulary
This volume is handsomely produced in hardback, its jacket depicting the farmhouse built on the site in the late eighteenth century, which left scant remains of the medieval abbey. The frontispiece has photographs of two vesica-shaped seals and a more elaborate circular one of the late fourteenth century which remain affixed to calendared documents. The last, which depicts the patrons St Mary (centre) and St John the Baptist, and on the right a f…
The Stamford Council of April 1327
This assembly of prelates and barons has been largely overlooked. The agenda comprised two principal items: the urgent necessity to raise money for military action against the Scots, who were later to make a laughing stock of the English at Stanhope Park, even endangering the life of the young Edward III, who is said to have wept from shame and exasperation and, secondly, the question of the queen's marital status. The successful invasion of Quee…
English Episcopal Acta 29: Durham, 1241-1283
Ecclesiastical historians have been well served by publication of original material: Concilia I and II; Records of Convocation (in progress) for the later medieval period and beyond; and English Episcopal Acta for the eleventh to thirteenth centuries, the first volume of which was edited in 1980 by David Smith of the Borthwick Institute, whose vade-mecum, Guide to Episcopal Registers, appeared the following year. The present well-edited volume, d…

Leadership in Medieval English Nunneries
This book comprises eight chapters followed by a conclusion and four appendices containing details of the ‘core monasteries’ in the study, the names of their superiors, an English text of the election of an abbess of Wilton (Salisbury Reg. Langton?) and another of the eulogy for Euphemia of Wherwell from VCH Hampshire. The reviewer would have preferred the two last in the original Latin. Many facets of conventual life are discussed and there is m…
The Episcopate during the Reign of Edward II and the Regency of Mortimer and Isabella
This article combines prosopographical analysis of the episcopate between 1307 and 1330 with examination of its participation in the politics of the time – baronial unrest, the deposition of Edward II and a regency dominated by his queen and her paramour. Elevation to the episcopate brought status, an opportunity for career clerks. Nobles were not prominent among bishops, nor were regular clergy; curiales were, but more numerous were university m…

It was a commonplace of the times, featured in royal letters despatched abroad, and of course in the chronicles, that during the reign of Edward II the ‘indiscretum regimen’ of bishops coupled with their ‘taciturnitas’ lay at the root of the manifest political troubles. In 1944 Kathleen Edwards produced two articles on Edward II's bishops, relating respectively to their ‘learning’ and to their ‘political importance’. Fifteen years later, she trea…

The Administration of the Diocese of Worcester ‘Sede Vacante’ 1266–1350
The claim of the archbishops of Canterbury, by virtue of their metropolitical power, to administer the spiritualities of vacant sees within their province, culminated during Boniface's archiepiscopate (1245–70) in compositions between the archbishop and the chapters of Lincoln, London, Salisbury and Worcester. These permitted the members of the chapters to administer their respective sees at times of vacancy, but it was at Worcester alone that th…
Aspects of the Episcopate of John Carpenter, Bishop of Worcester 1444–1476
The methods of appointment to English sees in the later Middle Ages are not of a kind to give assurance that the men chosen as bishops would be concerned to exercise pastoral care and give undivided attention to the daily routine of diocesan administration. This is not to deny that from time to time men so concerned did reach the Episcopal bench, but their numbers are small indeed, and seldom was the length of an episcopate such as to enable even…
Some Arguments in favour of Plurality in the Elizabethan Church
Plurality is, of course, a subject with a long history. One Elizabethan apologist argued that the Old Testament prophets were not tied to any particular synagogue, while St Peter, the Apostle of the Jews, had the cure of the whole nation, and St Paul of the Gentiles, being encumbered with the care of all the churches, a greater plurality even than that of St Peter. Less tendentiously one may add that it engaged the attention of the fathers at Cha…
The Education of the English Clergy During the Later Middle Ages: Some Observations on the Operation of Pope Boniface VIII'S Constitution Cum Ex Eo (1298)
Education in English ecclesiastical legislation of the later Middle Ages
Provincial and diocesan legislation provided a coherent system of religious education at a time when opportunities for study were few. It is true that in content little was new, but there was much in the way of reiteration, development and expansion, with particular attention to the practical details of implementation. Mediaeval education is often discussed in terms of clerical education on the one hand, and of lay education on the other. In this…
Wilde wittes and wilfulnes’: John Swetstock’s attack on those ‘poyswunmongeres’, the Lollards
Until the pioneer work of Dr G. R. Owst in the 1920s and 1930s English sermon literature was a neglected field. Even today Owst’s two general studies remain largely isolated monuments, the starting-point of those who would pursue the sermon, but not, perhaps, so influential in related fields as their intrinsic worth and astonishing thoroughness would appear to merit. As Owst pointed out, James Gairdner’s four-volume work on Lollardy failed to tak…
Adam Orleton and the Diocese of Winchester
Adam Orleton successively held the sees of Hereford (1317–27), Worcester (1327–33), and Winchester (1333–45). Such progression was accounted exceptional in his day, recalling for the uncharitable the remote and unfortunate precedent of archbishop Stigand rather than that of the estimable Richard Poore about a century before. In any case, within a few years of Orleton's death double translations were not uncommon. So respected a pastoral bishop as…

The Associates and Familia of William Gray and his use of patronage while bishop of Ely (1454–78)
While working on a more general assessment of William Gray's tenure of the see of Ely, I was struck by the amount of incidental information in his register relating to his associates, the officers of his spiritual and temporal administrations and the men who benefited from his patronage
Church, society and politics in the early fifteenth century as viewed from an English pulpit
Some may question the suitability of sermon material as a means of illuminating the thought and background of a specific period. If anything, preachers were even less original—though that is too modern a concept—than other categories of medieval author. Frequently the same material was recast and pressed into service on a variety of occasions; a practice familiar to preachers down the centuries, but one which effectively blurs the dates of initia…
The compilation of a late fourteenth-century precedent book— Register Brian 2
Among the episcopal registers housed at the county record office in St Helen’s, Worcester, is a neatly written paper book, which though it bears no medieval title, has often been described as the second volume of bishop Brian’s register. As has been pointed out recently, it was taken to be such by the county historian, Treadway Nash, and also by Reginald Lane Poole when he examined the Worcester records for the Historical Manuscripts Commission. …

The Church and Politics in Fourteenth-Century England: The Career of Adam Orleton c . 1275–1345
In recent years Edward II's reign has attracted the attention of a number of scholars whose work has considerably modified the traditional picture. As a result, there has been a move away from the emphasis on constitutional and administrative theory and practice to a consideration of the personalities involved, notably Edward himself and the earls of Pembroke and Lancaster. Although medieval biography is difficult, such an approach has been highl…

An English Archbishop and the Cerberus of War
For much of his political life John Stratford was to be actively engaged either in unleashing or in muzzling the dogs of war. On occasion he seemed to be endeavouring to combine these disparate functions. Here I propose briefly to examine his involvement in and his attitude to the three-headed monster represented by the perennial Anglo-Scottish conflict, civil strife within England, and the initial phase of the Hundred Years’ War. I am, of course…

Reginald Pecock: A tolerant man in an age of intolerance
Reginald Pecock, bishop of St. Asaph and subsequently of Chichester, has surely been one of the most misrepresented of men. Condemned in his later years as a heretic, he was grossly misunderstood by that garrulous prophet of doom, Thomas Gascoigne, who described him as this ‘Pacock’ who loosed arrows at the sun, one of which by the just judgment of God fell upon his own head. John Foxe allotted him a place as a protestant confessor and Father Rob…
