  • Who watches the watchmen? Evaluating evaluations of El Sistema

Open Access•Geoffrey Baker, Geoff Baker et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Music Education•2018

Within the growing field of publications on El Sistema and Sistema-inspired programmes around the world, a marked divide can be observed between the findings of critical academic studies and commissioned evaluations. Using evaluations of El Sistema in Venezuela and Aotearoa New Zealand as our principal case studies, we argue that this gulf can be explained at least partly by methodological problems in the way that some evaluations are carried out…

  • "El Sistema, "The Venezuelan Musical Miracle

Geoffrey Baker, Geoff Baker•ARTICLE•Latin American Music Review•2018•Cited by: 2

The Venezuelan orchestral training program El Sistema represents a paradox. It may be the most famous and lauded music education system in the world, yet scholarly examination in recent years has revealed numerous flaws in the dominant narrative, which appears increasingly like a myth. This article examines the processes by which this narrative was established both nationally and internationally, focusing on the creation, dissemination, and conso…

  • Before you turn the page

    Open Access•Geoff Baker•ARTICLE•REVISTA INTERNACIONAL DE…•2016

This article consists of a series of reflections on research on El Sistema and the reception of the first (and to date only) academic book on the program. It underlines the uncertainty of the international Sistema sphere in the face of the information that is emerging about the Venezuelan program, and proposes various reasons for taking that information seriously and beginning an open and honest debate about El Sistema's problems and the position…

  • Mala Bizta Sochal Klu

    Open Access•Geoff Baker•ARTICLE•Popular Music•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 11

The terms underground, alternative and commercial are widely used in discussions of popular music scenes in Havana and around the world. In Cuba, the words alternative and underground are often used interchangeably, in critical as well as popular discourse. I propose a working definition of, and a distinction between, these terms in Havana, since to render them synonymous reduces their usefulness. The distinction between underground and commercia…

The trailer describes underground scene of young musicians who, despite their creative suppression and censorship, have the courage to make a statement. This article questions this characterization of contemporary underground music in Havana, analyzing the relationship between Cuban und…

  • Reading and Politics in Early Modern England

Geoff Baker•BOOK•Reading and politics in early…•2010

"This book examines the activities of William Blundell, a seventeenth-century Catholic gentleman, and using the approaches of the history of reading provides a detailed analysis of his mindset. This is an important study that will be of interest to all who work on the early modern period. The examination of Blundell's political and cultural worlds complicates generalisations about early modern religious identities and challenges a historical dete…

  • Imposing Harmony

    Geoffrey Baker, Geoff Baker•BOOK•Imposing Harmony•2008•Cited by: 15

Imposing Harmonyis a groundbreaking analysis of the role of music and musicians in the social and political life of colonial Cuzco. Challenging musicology's cathedral-centered approach to the history of music in colonial Latin America, Geoffrey Baker demonstrates that rather than being dominated by the Cathedral, Cuzco's musical culture was remarkably decentralized. He shows that institutions such as parish churches and monasteries employed indig…

This article reviews key integrity issues confronting local government, based on experience in NSW and Queensland. Current issues confirm integrity to be a significant concern manifesting in a large variety of forms, both in council admini…

In 1673 three Indian maestros cantores were hired to provide their musical services to the monastery of San Juan de Dios in Cuzco. They agreed to perform at five weekly masses and a range of other annual feasts such as the Fridays in Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Palm Sunday, and the feast-days of San Bartolomé and San Juan (the patron saints of the monastery's hospital and of the order), as well as any funerals of members of the monastery.
