  • Soil Fertility Transitions in the Context of Industrialization, 1750–2000

Open Access•Dino Güldner, Laura Larsen et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science History•2021•References: 55

Fertile soils are essential for human health and nutrition and formed the foundation of human economies for millennia. Soils deserve close attention from environmental and economic historians and sustainability scientists. Most soil history literature addresses failure: misuse of soil, uncontrolled erosion, and the resulting collapse of past civilizations. More important, however, and of urgent interest for our present and future prosperity, are …

  • Trawling the Ocean of Grass

    Open Access•Laura Larsen•ARTICLE•Social Science History•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 18

Using a socioecological metabolism approach to analyze data from the Census of Agriculture, this article examines the underlying soil fertility of two case study areas in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan through the calculation of soil nitrogen balances. The Rural Municipalities of Wise Creek and Livingston are 300 miles apart and therefore have different topography, soil types, and rainfall levels, even though both are within the northern G…

  • Economics and Emotion

    Laura Larsen•ARTICLE•Histoire sociale•2021

In 1943, the federal government proclaimed the Canadian Wheat Board the exclusive marketing agent for Prairie farmers' grain. Prairie farmers and politicians from all parties strongly supported this action. Yet by 1993, the question of how best to market grain, cooperatively through the single desk or individually in a private market, increasingly divided the Prairie agrarian community. The 1973 rapeseed marketing vote, the continental barley mar…

  • Imperial Plots

    Laura Larsen•ARTICLE•Western Historical Quarterly•2017

Narratives of the Canadian prairie west usually focus on male settlers transforming neatly surveyed land into farmsteads. With Imperial Plots Sarah Carter shifts the focus to women and their attempts to homestead. The book is both a social and political history. Carter asks who these women were, how their desire for landownership fit into settler communities and wider understandings of women’s agricultural capabilities, and how the government res…

  • Postcards of Phoenix

    Laura Larsen, Lily Swanbrow•ARTICLE•Landscape Journal•2006•Cited by: 6•References: 1

The postcard is useful in understanding a city’s public image as well as the evolving notions of what constitutes the picturesque in different locations. Changes in the image of Phoenix, Arizona were often driven by the business elite and their efforts to market investment opportunities and profit from development. Early descriptions of Phoenix likened it to a midwestern city, while post-war messages concentrated on its exotic, tropical qualities…

  • Water content and land use history controlling soil CO 2 respiration and carbon stock in savanna soil and groundnut fields in semi-arid Senegal

Bo Elberling, Rasmus Fensholt et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2003•References: 22

Decomposition of soil organic carbon (SOC) regulates the partitioning between soil C-stock and release of CO2 to the atmosphere and is vital for soil fertility. Agricultural expansion followed by decreasing amounts of SOC and soil fertility is a problem mainly seen in tropical agro-ecosystems where fertilizers are in short supply. This paper focuses on factors influencing temporal trends in soil respiration measured as CO2 effluxes in grass savan…
