Mollusc Remains from an Archaeological Rock Shelter Site on the Buffalo National River, Arkansas, Southeastern USA
Zooarchaeological mollusc assemblages can show communities as they existed prior to any extensive modern impacts, representing an ecological baseline against which current populations can be evaluated. Here data are presented from the Pruitt Shelter sites (Late Woodland-Early Mississippian; ca. AD 700–1300), located on the Buffalo National River (Arkansas), where over 1000 freshwater mussels and over 20,000 gastropods (aquatic and terrestrial com…

Calibrating with Multiple Criteria
Pattern oriented modelling (POM) is an approach to calibration or validation that assesses a model using multiple weak patterns. We extend the concept of POM, using dominance to objectively identify the best parameter candidates. The TELL ME agent-based model is used to demonstrate the approach. This model simulates personal decisions to adopt protective behaviour during an influenza epidemic. The model fit is assessed by the size and timing of m…
National Police Reserve
Based upon years of research undertaken in the US Occupation archives, this book provides a history of Japan's National Police Reserve (NPR), the precursor of today's Ground Self Defense Force (GSDF). It is the first ever comprehensive and exclusively focused history of the force in any language. The book examines the domestic and international origins of the force, the American constabulary model upon which it was based, the NPR's character and …
Contested ‘Rearmament’
This paper employs previously unused archival sources to highlight some of the misconceptions and debates which surround the Japanese National Police Reserve (1950–1952), the precursor to today’s Ground Self Defense Force. The paper, which is the first on the National Police Reserve in English, examines much of the current historiography’s categorisation of the Reserve as an army, based on a very thin set of sources, and contrasts this with the c…
Henry IV and York Minster
Tom French died on 18 February 2001 after a short illness. He will be remembered as a distinguished scholar and historian of English stained glass and particularly for his contribution to the study of York Minster and its windows. In 1947, after distinguished service in the Royal Artillery, he joined the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments as an architectural investigator. He contributed to the Dorset county inventories and then moved to Yor…

The Glazing of the St William Window in York Minster
The heraldry of the donors depicted in stained glass along the base of the St William window is reassessed, and a date of c. 1415 suggested for the glazing instead of the hitherto accepted date of c. 1421–3. A problem in the heraldry is discussed, and two possible solutions are proposed. The one preferred here involves merely a change in plan during the actual period of glazing; the alternative is linked with a theory that the transeptal bays wer…

The Dating of the Lady Chapel in York Minster
An attempt to justify the traditional dating of the lady chapel at York Minster by a study of the carved stone heraldic shields in the spandrels of the main arcades. The heads carved above the shields are accepted as being, for the main part, attempted portraits of the owners of the respective arms, and are identified where possible to see if their physiognomy fits the accepted date. A brief summary is given of the later stages in the completion …
Observations on Some Medieval Glass in York Minster
A note on some twelfth- and fourteenth-century stained glass in York Minster, all reused, suggests that the early glass dates to 1175–1200 and was in the Norman choir, and that it was removed before the present choir was started in 1361. The fourteenth-century glass, often dated to c. 1380, can be dated to 1330-9 by stylistic parallels in York Minster, local churches, and at Rouen, and by comparisons with manuscripts and monumental brasses. It is…
Losses and Survivals in the Dodecanese
This article has been written as a supplement to the Stationery Office booklet Works of Art in Greece, the Greek Islands and the Dodecanese , issued by the British Committee on the Preservation and Restitution of Works of Art, Archives and other Material in Enemy Hands. The survey of the antiquities in the Dodecanese was only commenced in September 1945 and was still in progress when the booklet went to press, with the result that only the inform…
