The Formation of Homosexual Identities
This paper uses sociological theory to develop an ideal-typical model of homosexual identity formation. The four-stage model outlined here represents a synthesis and an elaboration on previous research and theorizing on homosexual identity development. The model describes how committed homosexuals, lesbians and gay males who see themselves as homosexual and adopt corresponding lifestyles, recall having acquired their homosexual identities. Often …

The myth of sexual compulsivity
This paper analyzes critically the newly discovered “conditions” of sexual addiction and sexual compulsion from the sociological perspective of symbolic interactionism. We begin by describing the concepts of sexual addiction and sexual compulsion and by providing case studies of each “condition.” We then discuss the cultural relativity of sexual conduct, and identify features of the late 1970s' and 1980s' sociosexual landscape that encouraged a p…
Walking the Line
In this paper, I use stigma theory to argue that sexuality professionals are marked as sexually suspect. Personal and professional risks and benefits associated with careers in sexuality education and research are identified, as are the reactions of sexuality experts to their stigmatization. Audience and actor characteristics that facilitate personal stigmatization are isolated, along with factors that reduce professional stigmatization in academ…

Self, Self-Concept, Identity, and Homosexual Identity
This paper uses symbolic interactionist theory to develop a theoretical framework that relates, defines, and differentiates the terms self, self-concept, identity, and homosexual identity. It argues that it is useful to view self and identity as constructs consisting of analytically separate dimensions and components, and defines and specifies the dimensions and components contained within the constructs of self and identity. It then critically e…
Variables Related to the Acquisition of a Gay Identity
The research reported here examines variables that relate to the speed at which gay identities are acquired. Age cohort, high school heterosexual activity involving more than kissing, and high school homosexual activity involving more than kissing were found to relate to the ages at which a sample of homosexual males suspected they might be homosexual, labeled their feelings as homosexual, defined themselves as homosexual, started to socialize wi…
The Silent Community
Becoming Homosexual
How do male homosexuals who choose homosexuality as a way of life recall having acquired their gay identities? This question provided the impetus for the descriptive study presented here. Rather than concerning itself with the etiology of homosexuality, this report-- a synthesis of and elaboration on recent investigations of homosexual and/or gay identity--concerns itself with documenting the ways in which a man learns that he is homosexual, how …
Androgyny
Heterosexual and homosexual activity among gay males
A total of 150 adult self‐professed homosexual men, age 20 to 40, living in three locales‐Manhattan, Suffolk County, (N.Y.), and Minneapolis‐were interviewed, in part to determine their heterosexual and homosexual activities. About two‐thirds (65%) said they had experienced intercourse with a woman at least once, but only 6% had done so in the year prior to the survey. The respondents with heterosexual experience (especially with several women) w…
Tolerance as a Correlate of Experience with Stigma
Scales measuring attitudes toward various unconventional groups were presented to 100 college students and 51 homosexual respondents. Homosexual respondents expressed significantly more tolerant attitudes toward deviantly labeled groups than did student respondents. Homosexuals were also significantly less likely to place social restrictions on those who opted for unconventional alternatives. However, differences between student and homosexual re…
Wayward Cops
This study reports on three deviant social types in small police departments: the “door man,” the “mouth man,” and the “wheel man.” Functionalists traditionally have focused on the abstract, collective functions of deviance but this work concentrates on the practical and individualistic uses of marginal group members. It is argued that deviant roles provide institutionalized means by which non-deviant members may indirectly violate or evade norms…
