Between urgency and data quality
Balancing speed and quality during crises pose challenges for ensuring the value and utility of data in social science research. The COVID-19 pandemic in particular underscores the need for high-quality data and rapid dissemination. Given the importance of behavioural measures and compliance with measures to contain the pandemic, social science research has played a key role in policymaking during this global crisis. This study addresses two key …
A Cost Analysis of Rethink the Strip
BACKGROUND: Routine self-monitoring of blood glucose is a low-value practice that provides limited benefit for patients with non-insulin-treated type 2 diabetes mellitus. OBJECTIVES: We estimated the costs of Rethink the Strip (RTS), a multistrategy approach to the de-implementation of self-monitoring of blood glucose in primary care. RESEARCH DESIGN: RTS was conducted among 20 primary care clinics in North Carolina. We estimated the non-site-bas…
Tools and methods in participatory modeling
Various tools and methods are used in participatory modelling, at different stages of the process and for different purposes. The diversity of tools and methods can create challenges for stakeholders and modelers when selecting the ones most appropriate for their projects. We offer a systematic overview, assessment, and categorization of methods to assist modelers and stakeholders with their choices and decisions. Most available literature provid…
Unilateral Presidential Policy Making and the Impact of Crises
Scholars interested in the power of the presidency often overlook the importance of a crisis. The right kind of event, however, has characteristics that create a window of opportunity for a president to exert or expand his unilateral power. Failure to explore this relationship leaves a gap in our knowledge regarding presidential power, which this article addresses. The results show foreign policy crises provide the largest window for a president …
Generating rights for communities harmed by mining
As global mineral prices and production have boomed, Canadian mining companies have expanded their operations abroad with the support of the federal government. In light of the unregulated character and often destructive impacts of much new mining activity, the recent extractive industry expansion has been accompanied by increasing conflict. We analyse lawsuits launched in Canadian courts and in the inter-American human rights system by affected …
Weight Loss and Related Behavior Changes Among Lesbians
Overweight and obesity are known risk factors for several modifiable, if not preventable diseases. Growing evidence suggests that lesbians may have higher rates of obesity than other women. This study was designed to describe weight loss and behavior changes related to food choices and exercise habits among lesbians who participated in a predominantly lesbian, mainstream, commercial weight loss program. Behavioral changes were recorded in exercis…
The Effect of Family Literacy Interventions on Children’s Acquisition of Reading From Kindergarten to Grade 3
This review focuses on intervention studies that tested whether parent–child reading activities would enhance children’s reading acquisition. The combined results for the 16 intervention studies, representing 1,340 families, were clear: Parent involvement has a positive effect on children’s reading acquisition. Further analyses revealed that interventions in which parents tutored their children using specific literacy activities produced larger e…
Siblings, Parenting, Conflict, and Divorce
This study investigated the relations among divorce, parenting quality, parental differential treatment (PDT), perceived unfairness of PDT, direct and differential exposure to interparental conflict, and adjustment in a sample of 368 young adults from intact and divorced families. Participants completed online questionnaires regarding their own and their sibling's family experiences in middle adolescence and their present adjustment. Participants…
Binge-eating disorder and the night-eating syndrome
Binge eating disorder is far less frequent than has been believed on the basis of questionnaire studies and it is highly responsive to placebos. Frequency of the night-eating syndrome is comparable to that of binge eating disorder. Future studies should assess binge eating disorder by interview rather than by self-administered questionnaire
Growth of native Hawaiian school children
Annual measurements of skinfold thicknesses at six sites (triceps, biceps, medial calf, subscapular, abdominal, and suprailiac) and the body mass index have been obtained from a sample of native Hawaiian school children and their non‐Hawaiian classmates in a four year semilongitudinal study. Four cohorts were measured, with the children beginning the study in grades one, four, seven and ten, respectively. Information on percentage of Polynesian a…
The Effects of Obesity on the Clinical Judgments of Mental Health Professionals
This study was undertaken to determine whether a client's weight influences the clinical judgments of mental health practitioners. We used an analogue approach in which 120 mental health workers evaluated a case history that included a photograph of the client. Using the photographic process ECRM, we altered the image of a single photograph of a middle-aged woman to produce three pictures: best-weight model, overweight model, and obese model. Res…
