This study examined Disney studios’ portrayals of race as it relates to the physical, mental, and social characteristics of major characters ( N = 319) within Disney animated films released from 1937 to 2021 ( N = 59). Findings revealed most of the characters featured were portrayed as White (68.3%) whereas BIPOC characters made up 31.7% of the total. Who's most at risk? A person‐centered approach to understanding the long‐term relationship between early social media use and later depression across adolescence
INTRODUCTION: Person-centered analyses examined the relationship between social media use and depression over an 8-year period. The purpose was to examine the varying ways early social media use was associated with the development of depressive symptoms with a hypothesis that social media would not have a uniform association with depressive symptoms across adolescents. METHODS: Participants included 488 adolescents (52% female), living in the Uni…
Critical race theory in human development and family science
The field of human development and family science (HDFS) conducts interdisciplinary research that has substantially benefited children and families. However, like other disciplines, in the wake of the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery in 2020, HDFS has begun to deeply reflect on its relationship to race and racism. In this paper, we aim to help with this process. We do so by summarizing the history of HDFS and its present…

Research on LGBTQ+ individuals, belonging, and religiosity has been mixed. Some studies have illustrated the ways religion can harm LGBTQ+ individuals while others suggest religion has positive impacts. In the current study, we sought to understand this complexity by examining the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals who have been or currently are affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (i.e. Mormon, LDS). A thematic analysis…
Associations between sexual music lyrics and sexting across adolescence
There has been little research on the impact of media on sexting behaviors in adolescence, and none regarding the influence of musical lyrics. The goal of the current study was to explore these associations in a longitudinal investigation. Participants were 278 fourteen-year-old adolescents (all cisgender, 49.46% female) who were assessed at three different time points. Participants completed several questionnaires (including music preferences) a…
Beliefs, practices, or culture? A mixed-method study of religion and body esteem
Masters of media
The development of problematic media use in early childhood is not well understood. The current study examined long-term associations between parental media efficacy, parental media monitoring, and problematic media use across a three-year period of time during early childhood. Participants included 432 parents who reported on their own parenting and their child’s use of problematic media once a year for three years (M age of child at Wave 1 = 29…
