Healthy lifestyle moderates the association between recent negative life events and depressive symptoms
Background: Both recent negative life events (RNLEs) and lifestyle factors were associated with depressive symptoms, but it is unclear whether adopting a healthy lifestyle can mitigate the association between RNLEs and depressive symptoms. We aim to explore the modifying role of adopting a healthy lifestyle in the association between RNLEs and depressive symptoms. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 4,278 participants aged 18-70 y…
Grade-level differences in the association between cumulative family risk factors and problematic smartphone use among Chinese adolescents
Multiple family risk factors were independently and cumulatively associated with a higher risk of PSU, particularly among middle school students. These findings underscore the importance of addressing family-related risks and fostering emotionally supportive home environments to mitigate PSU in adolescents
Longitudinal association between somatic symptoms and suicidal ideation in adults with major depressive disorder
Our findings suggest that in patients with MDD, there is a significant association between somatic symptoms and their subtypes with SI. Notably, the risk of SI is significantly increased by somatic symptoms in a nonlinear manner. These findings highlight the necessity of addressing somatic symptoms in the management of depression and emphasize the importance of developing targeted interventions to mitigate suicide risk in this vulnerable populati…

The Factor Structure and Measurement Invariance of the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations in a Sexual Minority Population
Coping strategies have been studied as protective factors against stress for individuals. However, the psychometric properties of the most widely used coping self-report questionnaires, the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS-21), have not been examined in a sexual minority population (men and women that identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual or LGB). In this study, we conducted exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor…

Sex and sexual orientation in the effects of coping strategies on relationship satisfaction
Predictive potential of somatic symptoms for the identification of subthreshold depression and major depressive disorder in primary care settings
Somatic symptoms were associated with the presence of SD and MDD. In addition, somatic symptoms, notably those related to energy, showed good predictive potential in identifying SD and MDD in primary care. The clinical implication of the present study is that GPs should consider the closely related somatic symptoms for early recognition for depression in practice
Trajectories of spherical equivalent refraction from grades 1 to 4 in Chinese children
Myopia interventions are best started in grade 1 or preschool age. If interventions are not taken in time, the latest intervention window might be in grades 1, 2, and 3 for children with a high probability of belonging to the sharp-developing, high-developing, and rapid-developing myopia groups, respectively. The above probabilities might be predicted using the model we established. Moreover, the interventions for myopic children shouldn't be ign…

Association Between Childhood Maltreatment, FKBP5 Gene Methylation, and Anxiety Symptoms Among Chinese Adolescents
Childhood emotional abuse was associated with an increased risk of anxiety symptoms among Chinese adolescents. After multiple hypothesis testing, childhood maltreatment was not significantly associated with FKBP5 DNA methylation. DNA methylation of the promoter region of the FKBP5 gene was not a significant predictor of anxiety symptoms. More attention should be paid to the mental health of adolescents with childhood maltreatment

A total of 1,952 middle and high school students as eligible participant…
Adverse Childhood Experiences and Subsequent Chronic Diseases Among Middle-aged or Older Adults in China and Associations With Demographic and Socioeconomic Characteristics
Importance: Associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and chronic diseases among middle-aged or older Chinese individuals have not been well documented. In addition, whether demographic and socioeconomic characteristics modify any such associations has been underexplored. Objectives: To examine associations between ACEs and subsequent chronic diseases and to assess whether age, sex, educational level, annual per capita household e…
The Role of Problematic Smartphone Uses and Psychological Distress in the Relationship Between Sleep Quality and Disordered Eating Behaviors Among Chinese College Students
Background: Sleep problems and eating disorders (EDs) are both serious public health concerns often seen in young adults. Yet, the underlying mechanisms for such associations are largely unknown. This study aims to examine potential serial multiple mediation effects of problematic smartphone use (PSU) and psychological distress (i.e., depressive and anxiety symptoms) in the relationship between sleep quality and disordered eating behaviors/attitu…
Associations Between Child Maltreatment and Depressive Symptoms Among Chinese College Students
Background: Depressive symptoms and child maltreatment are both global public health problems among young adults. This study aimed to investigate the associations between five types of child maltreatment and depressive symptoms among Chinese college students, with a focus on potential sex differences. Methods: A cross-sectional study of a nationally representative sample of Chinese college students was conducted from March to June 2019 with a mul…
Associations of Substance Use Behaviors With Suicidal Ideation and Suicide Attempts Among US and Chinese Adolescents
Background: Adolescence has been described as a period of increased health risk-taking behaviors. Given the variety of cultural contexts, healthcare systems, and public health policies in different regions, the present study aimed to determine whether there are similar or different associations of substance use behaviors with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among US and Chinese adolescents. Methods: This study included a total of 14,765 US…
Association between Hypertriglyceridemic-Waist Phenotype and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Middle-Aged and Older Chinese Population
Current evidence remains inconsistent with regard to the association between different triglyceridemic-waist phenotypes and the risks for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We aimed to investigate this association among a retrospective cohort analysis of 6918 participants aged ≥ 45 years in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Participants were categorized into four triglyceridemic-waist phenotypes consisting of NWNT (normal…

Effect of Sex on the Association Between Nonmedical Use of Opioids and Sleep Disturbance Among Chinese Adolescents
Sleep disturbance and non-medical prescription opioid use (NMPOU) are currently growing public health concerns, and sex differences may result in differential exposure to frequency of NMPOU or sleep disturbance. This study aimed to explore the association between the frequency of lifetime or past-year NMPOU and sleep disturbance and to evaluate whether there was any sex difference in this association among Chinese adolescents. A cross-sectional s…
Treatment outcome of new pulmonary tuberculosis in Guangzhou, China 1993–2002
The total treatment success rate in the current study was similar to the WHO target for all smear positive cases, while the failure rate and the default rate in 2002 were slightly higher. Good care of elderly patients, early diagnosis of cavitation and compliance with treatment could improve the success rate of TB treatment

Chinese Sexual Minority Male Adolescents’ Suicidality and Body Mass Index
Excess weight status may increase the risk of suicidality among sexual minority females, but few studies have examined this suicidality disparity in sexual minority males. This study examined the association between sexual minority status and suicide attempts in Chinese male adolescents and tested whether body mass index (BMI) had a moderating effect on that association. Data were collected from 7th to 12th graders from seven randomly selected pr…
Association between Problematic Internet Use and Sleep Disturbance among Adolescents
Use of the Internet has become an integral part of daily life. Adolescents are especially at a higher risk of developing problematic Internet use (PIU). Although one of the most well-known comorbid conditions of PIU is sleep disturbance, little is known about the sex disparity in this association. This school-based survey in students of grades 7−9 was conducted to estimate the prevalence of PIU and sleep disturbance among Chinese adolescents, to …
