  • Worker Identity

    Open Access•Seonghoon Hong, Adrienne E Eaton et al.•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2025•References: 33

Union organizing has swept U.S. campuses as graduate assistants formed a common identity as university employees. In this article, theories and empirical evidence relevant to worker identity formation are used as a basis for empirical research. The hypothesis that deteriorating career prospects have brought employee identity to the fore receives support from survey data. The traditional socialization process whereby graduate students become acade…

  • Paying the Price for a Broken Healthcare System

    Open Access•Amos Avgar, Adrienne E Eaton et al.•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•2020•Cited by: 3

Even before the word pandemic reentered the lexicon, pressures stemming from institutional and technological change challenged policymakers and provider organizations to rethink core features of the manner in which we deliver healthcare. This essay introduces a special issue devoted to the consequences of change on the healthcare sector's varied stakeholders. It does so in the context of our eventual, post-coronavirus reemergence and a renewed in…

  • Assessing Employee Support during Union Organizing Campaigns

    Open Access•Sean Edmund Rogers, Adrienne E Eaton et al.•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2019•References: 20

Many labor unions assess support among prospective members to guide decision making during organizing campaigns, and to predict voting in representation elections. However, research on the actual practice of how unions make assessments is limited. We fill this void through a study that combined quantitative and qualitative analysis of the assessment activities. The quantitative portion involved a survey of eligible voters in the 2010 flight atten…

  • Informal Workers and Collective Action

Martha A Chen, Adrienne E Eaton et al.•BOOK•Informal Workers and Collective…•2017

Informal Workers and Collective Action features nine cases of collective action to improve the status and working conditions of informal workers. • Healing Together

    Paul S Adler, Thomas A Kochan et al.•BOOK•Healing Together•2013

Kaiser Permanente is the largest managed care organization in the country. It also happens to have the largest and most complex labor-management partnership ever created in the United States. • Effects of Unionization on Graduate Student Employees

Open Access•Sean Edmund Rogers, Adrienne E Eaton et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 19

In cases involving unionization of graduate student research and teaching assistants at private U.S. universities, the National Labor Relations Board has, at times, denied collective bargaining rights on the presumption that unionization would harm faculty-student relations and academic freedom. Using survey data collected from PhD students in five academic disciplines across eight public U.S. universities, the authors compare represented and non…

  • Nlrb Elections versus Card Check Campaigns

    Open Access•Adrienne E Eaton, Jill Kriesky•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 16

The authors evaluate policy arguments for and against the use of card check as a method to determine union recognition. The results of an analysis of data from telephone surveys of 430 workers who had been through the NLRB election or card check campaigns of six unions in 2003 indicate that there was little undue union pressure to support unionization in card check campaigns, and that management pressure on workers to oppose unionization was cons…

  • Tracking Local Unions Involved in Managerial Decision-Making

    Open Access•Adrienne E Eaton, Saul A Rubinstein•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 11

This paper reviews the empirical literature on the impact of union and worker participation in managerial decision-making on the union as an institution. It then looks at the experience over time of eleven local unions heavily involved in various forms of participation, trac ing both the trajectory of participation and union outcomes. The outcomes examined include membership levels, member participa tion, leadership development, internal politics…

  • Managerial Unionism

    Open Access•Adrienne E Eaton, Paula B Voos•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2004•References: 4

Surveys demonstrate that U.S. managers, like other workers, want greater voice at work. Many have joined organizations that repre sent employee interests: caucuses based on social identity, pressure groups, and professional associations. In varying degrees, these organizations use old union tactics such as mutual aid, skill-certi fication, and political activity. All these organizations have seri ous limitations. For the benefit of both managers …

  • Union Organizing under Neutrality and Card Check Agreements

    Open Access•Adrienne E Eaton, Jill Kriesky•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2001•Cited by: 18•References: 12

Collectively bargained language concerning union organizing has become increasingly common. Typically included in such language is the employer's agreement to remain neutral in the organizing process, or to recognize unions based on card checks by neutral third parties (as an alternative to NLRB elections), or both. The authors examine the content of and organizing experience under 118 separate written agreements of this kind. They find strong ev…

  • Organizing to Win

Adrienne E Eaton, Sheldon Friedman et al.•REVIEW•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2000

At a time when the American labor movement is mobilizing for a major resurgence through new organizing, here, at last, is a book about research on union organizing strategies. Previous studies have focused on factors contributing to union decline, devoting little attention to the organizing process itself. The twenty chapters in this volume dramatically increase understanding of the range and effectiveness of new organizing strategies and their p…

  • The Survival of Employee Participation Programs in Unionized Settings

    Open Access•Adrienne E Eaton•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•1994•Cited by: 13•References: 14

Data from two surveys are analyzed to identify determinants of the survival of participative programs in unionized settings. The first survey responses were collected in 1987 from local union representatives of 86 bargaining units involved in a participation program; the second were collected from 66 of those same representatives, as well as 49 of their management counterparts, three years later. A surprisingly low failure rate of approximately 2…

  • The Impact of Quality of Work Life Programs and Grievance System Effectiveness on Union Commitment

    Adrienne E Eaton, Michael E Gordon et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•1992•Cited by: 3•References: 21

Based on an analysis of data from a 1987 survey of four different bargaining units within the same local union, the authors conclude that union members who participated in Quality of Work Life (QWL) programs were less likely than nonparticipants to view QWL as a threat to the union, and also more loyal to the union. Another finding, however, is that the perceived effectiveness of the grievance procedure was a much stronger determinant of attitude…

  • The Extent and Determinants of Local Union Control of Participative Programs

    Open Access•Adrienne E Eaton•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•1990•Cited by: 8•References: 12

This paper examines the responses of 86 local unions to participative programs such as Employee Involvement. Representatives of the unions were surveyed regarding the level of union involvement in and control over programs in their workplaces. Survey results indicate that there is significant variation among local unions in the level of control achieved. Multivariate analysis suggests that union control over participative programs is less a funct…

  • Historical Limits on Neoclassical Strike Theories

Cohn, Samuel Cohn et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•1989•Cited by: 3•References: 12

This study analyzes the determinants of strikes in French coal mining over the period 1890-1935. The results indicate that factors emphasized by traditional bargaining power models were more important determinants of strikes in that setting than was economic variability. This finding supports the hypothesis that neoclassical theories of strikes-Hicksian theories that strikes are a function of the parties' lack of information about the economic en…
