The Green New Deal, Subsidiarity, and Local Action
A common criticism of the Green New Deal proposal to address climate change is that it would centralize too much power at the level of the federal government. However, the Green New Deal can avoid this by centering local action and decision-making in keeping with the principle of subsidiarity from Catholic social ethics. This principle holds that higher levels of society should not override the initiative of lower levels of society but should ins…
Experienced harms from substance use among college students
Many college students experience personal consequences from their own substance use as well as secondhand effects resulting from other students' substance use. Our study identifies meaningful subgroup response patterns representing the construct of experienced harms, that is, the combined harms resulting from personal substance use and the substance use of others. In this sample six latent classes of harms experienced by participants were identif…
Exploring the association between alcohol, marijuana, and secondhand effects with rural college students
The current study investigated the association between secondhand effects and personal consequences with substance use in a sample of rural college students (N = 412; 55.1% women; 92.2% white/non-Hispanic). The study extends the body of secondhand effects research by (a) investigating the association of marijuana use with the experience of secondhand effects; (b) examining the association of onset risk of substance use (< 18 years old) with the e…
Correlates of Picuriste Use in a Sample of Health-Seeking Haitian Immigrants and Adult Children of Immigrants in Miami–Dade County, Florida
Objectives. We explored covariates of the use of picuristes (traditional health workers with no formal medical training who provide intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous injections, typically with nonsterile needles) in the Haitian community of Miami–Dade County, Florida. Methods. We surveyed a community-based sample of 205 Haitian immigrants and adult children of Haitian immigrants. Through logistic regression analysis, we sought to corro…
What is Relapse? A Contemporary Exploration of Treatment of Alcoholism
In clinical settings, clients treated for alcohol abuse or dependency often engage with multiple service providers. Nonstandardized definitions for treatment outcome obscure treatment success. Using content analysis and preestablished selection criteria on a set of alcohol treatment outcome studies conducted between 1990 and 2006, we evaluated the definition of relapse using a typology derived from an interrater agreement analysis. The interrater…
Validating the Multidimensional Measure of Cultural Identity Scales for Latinos among Latina mothers and daughters
The psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Measure of Cultural Identity Scales for Latinos (MMCISL; Félix-Ortiz, Newcomb, & Myers, 1994) have never been examined in an adult Latina sample representing various levels of nativity and nationality. The rationale for the study was to confirm the factor structure and psychometric properties of the MMCISL with a predominantly immigrant sample of Latina mothers and daughters (n = 316). Adequate …
Misperception of College Drinking Norms
This study of 1,201 college students from a minority-serving institution examines the joint distribution of self-reported drinking and the perception of other students' drinking across ethnic/race groups. Results indicated a main effect for ethnic/race group and main effects for gender and heavy drinking status. Interaction terms were not statistically significant. Several randomized clinical trials report that assessment and feedback which corre…
Understanding Latino Family Attitudes in Relation to Latino Gang Members' Substance Abuse
This paper presents a content analysis of ethnographic interviews from long-term Latino gang members whose families have recently immigrated to the United States. Positive relationships within the family, parental support, a consistent and constructive parental discipline style and adult supervision tend to be related negatively to adolescents' deviant behaviors and their association with deviant peers. An expected positive relationship between t…
A Confirmatory Analysis of the Organ Donation Readiness Index
The need for transplant exceeds the number of available organs. Antigen compatible organs are particularly scarce for African Americans because of their proportionately lower rate of donations. This study presents a measure of organ donation readiness. Examination of the factor structure and a test of weak invariance were conducted on cross-sectional (n = 2,662) and longitudinal data (n = 1,316) in a community-based sample of African Americans. A…
Exploring the Use of the Stages of Change Model to Increase Organ Donations Among African Americans
The success of organ transplants is affected by the degree of antigen match between donor and recipient. With organ transplants among African Americans, finding a good antigen match is difficult. While the consent rate for organ donations among Caucasians is 50%, this rate among African Americans is only 12%. The resulting ratio of donors to “recipients” is 1 to 9 in African Americans. The majority of organs received by African Americans come fro…
Is Smoking Associated with Height and Weight
The reported relationship between height and smoking was tested using data from a representative sample of the U.S. population (N = 41,014). Both height and weight were associated with smoking. A further analysis for males and females separately showed that the initial results were a result of confounding of the variables with gender
