  • Data-driven strategies to improve nitrogen use efficiency of rice farming in South Asia

    Open Access•Sam Coggin, Andrew J Mcdonald et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2025•References: 3

Increasing nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in agricultural production mitigates climate change, limits water pollution and reduces fertilizer subsidy costs. Nevertheless, strategies for increasing NUE without jeopardizing food security are uncertain in globally important cropping systems. Here we analyse a novel dataset of more than 31,000 farmer fields spanning the Terai of Nepal, Bangladesh’s floodplains and four major rice-producing regions of I…

  • Economics of sustainable irrigation in smallholder agriculture

Open Access•Anton Urfels, Alisher Mirzabaev et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Economics of sustainable irrigation in smallholder agriculture: implications for food security and climate action, Anton Urfels, Alisher Mirzabaev, Stephen Bricx, Proloy Deb, Kumala Dewi, Gio Evangelista, Rica Joy Flor, Ben Harris, Nishanka Jayasiri, Avinash Kishore, Andrew J McDonald, Manoranjan Mondal, Emma Quicho, Kazuki Saito, Virender Kumar, Alice Laborte

  • Understanding decision processes in becoming a fee-for-hire service provider

Open Access•Brendan Brown, Arindam Samaddar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2021•Cited by: 3

While Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) has numerous potential benefits to smallholder farmers in the Eastern Gangetic Plains of South Asia, it's out-scaling has been limited by both a lack of demand by farmers and limited supply of DSR services by machinery owners. This contrasts with the comparatively more rapid scaling of zero tillage wheat in the region. This trend is yet to be fully explored, particularly when focus has been placed almost exclusively…

  • Human Activity and Its Impact on Vegetation

Open Access•P Venu, Virender Kumar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•1990

Sikkim, the smallest hilly state of the Indian Union lies in the Eastern Himalayas. Owing to altitudinal variation (300 to 8,400 metres) the state exhibits climate ranging from Sub-tropical to Alpine. In addition to the variety of environments, there is a large variety of ethnic groups solely depending on the nearby forests for their day to day needs. High population pressure and lack of economic opportunities has led to ‘over use’ of environment…

  • Limnological Survey of Water Bodies of the Sikkim Himalayas, India

Open Access•P Venu, Virender Kumar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•1990

A two walling investigation. (1981-1483) was talon up on seven lotic systems and five lentic, systems in Midis for investigation. Results tabulated under three seasons, viz., Pre monsoon, Manama old seasons indicate there is significant variation seationally in nutrients such as calcium chlorides. sulfates etc. Total solid content is very high in these waters adding much biotic in is of the of the nutrients, these waters exhibit poor planktonic c…
