Dry and undressed: A response to the interlocutors of ‘Sociology of fashion: What would Luhmann say?’
We address the five interlocutors of our article ‘Sociology of fashion: What would Luhmann say?’ in a deliberately dry manner. Their perceptive remarks concern both the limitations of our expanded systems-theoretical approach and the rich potential it offers for future conceptual and empirical exploration. While reiterating the partial incommensurability between a systems-theoretical perspective on fashion and the premises underlying several resp…
Sociology of fashion: What would Luhmann say
Fashion is often linked to fleeting trends and seasonal clothing changes, leading to its dismissal as socially insignificant. However, we argue that sociology must recognize the ‘in/out' difference as a key temporal dynamic shaping the functioning of various societal subsystems. We illustrate fashion's influence in three areas: the social sciences and humanities, the visual arts, and the clothing economy, emphasizing its varying degrees of impact…
Living up to a bohemian work ethic. Balancing autonomy and risk in the symbolic economy of the performing arts
Mayday, Mayday, Mayday! Moving from European Discourses on the Precarious and Art to the Realities of Contemporary Dance
In this article, we encapsulate several key debates in sociology, cultural and arts politics and the media industry on precarious work since its emergence at the turn of the twenty-first century. After setting out the fundamental discourses on precarity, we concentrate on contemporary dance artists as precarious workers and investigate the extent to which different levels of precarity affect them, distinguishing relevant aspects related to socio-…
Beyond issue diversification: N-VA and the communitarisation of political, economic and cultural conflicts in Belgium
© 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. Since the early 2000s, the Flemish nationalist party New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) has experienced a burgeoning growth. Paradoxically, for a stateless nationalist and regionalist party (SNRP), this performance has occurred without major changes in mass support for independence and only ambiguous ones for more regional autonomy, which suggests that the party appeals to different e…
Rethinking individualization: The basic script and the three variants of institutionalized individualism
This article proposes a more culturalist and variegated conception of the individual than that presented by individualization theorists. Inspired by the approach of the individual advocated by Émile Durkheim, Talcott Parsons and John Meyers, it first outlines the general script of the individual-as-actor that informs modern individualism as well as the generic characteristics that are routinely attributed to persons such as agency and free will. …
After Luhmann: Dirk Baecker's Sociology of Culture and Art
The German sociologist Dirk Baecker is one of the most prominent voices within contemporary social systems theory and German sociology, but is not well known within the wider circles of international sociology. He follows in the footsteps of Niklas Luhmann, yet in marked contrast with his 'sociological master' Baecker also gives ample attention to the notion of culture. This paper first summarizes some of the main lines in his writings on the not…
The Ambivalence of Religiosity and Religion: A Reading of Georg Simmel
The author discusses Georg Simmel’s writings on religiosity and religion, which only cover a rather tiny part of his total oeuvre, in view of a possible illumination of the material object of the sociology of religion. The distinction between religiosity and religion, which is fundamental according to Simmel, is presented against the more general background of Simmel’s so-called formal sociology and his overall “Lebensphilosophie” [philosophy of …

“The Late Niklas Luhmann” on Religion: An Overview
The authors present an overview of the main developments in Niklas Luhmann's approach to religion after the publication of Funktion der Religion (1977). Particular attention is given to Luhmann's definition of religion in terms of the distinction between the observable and the unobservable. This characterization corresponds to a highly specific view of religion as a functional subsystem within modern society. Religious communication, argues Luhma…
