  • Effect of Sociocultural Cleavage on Genetic Differentiation

Faisal Khan, Faisal Ali Anwarali Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2008•References: 9

Indian populations possess an exclusive genetic profile primarily due to the many migratory events, which caused an extensive range of genetic diversity, and also due to stringent and austere sociocultural barriers that structure these populations into different endogamous groups. In the present study we attempt to explore the genetic relationships between various endogamous North Indian populations and to determine the effect of stringent social…

  • Genetic Studies in Five Endogamous Populations of North Bihar

    Open Access•B N Pandey, P K L Das et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•1994

Five caste populations (Banu, Bhumihar, Dusadh, Kurmi and Chamar) from Pumia zone of North Bihar were studied for the ABO Wood groups, the Rh blood groups, PTC tasting ability and red-green colour blindness. All five castes have high frequency of the B group. It has keen concluded that correlation between ethnic relationship and serological similarities is not close Genetic distance analysis showed the existence of a clear distance pattern. Bania…

  • Respiratory adaptation to high altitude in adolescent Bod girls of the Western Himalayas

Open Access•S L Malik, Saloni Malik et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1993

The impact of high-altitude environment was studied on respiratory functions and body measurements in adolescent Bod girls of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Data were collected on 133 high-altitude and 141 low-altitude Bod girls in the age range 12-18 years. Lung functions were, age to age, higher in high-altitude girls than their coeval lowlanders. This has been explained as an adaptation to the stress of low atmospheric pressure at high alti…

  • Age Changes and Altitudinal Differences in Blood Pressure in Bod Girls of North-West Himalayas

    Open Access•Atul Kumar Pandey, L Malik et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•1991•References: 1

Based on 154 high altitude and 163 low altitude Bud girls, it has been observed that blood pressure is lower in highlander Bad girls than their coeval lowland girls in the age range of 11 to 18 yrs. In body weight girls below 14 yrs. don’t differ significantly, but after 14 yrs, low altitude girls are significantly heavier. Low altitude girls are generally taller, but the differences are statistically non-significant

  • Anthropometric somatotype of Bod girls

    Open Access•Atul Kumar Pandey, S L Malik•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1990

The high altitude environment is known to influence the morphophysiology of man in a variety of ways. Its possible impact on somatotype of adolescent girls has not been investigated so far. For this purpose 348 female Bods, from 10 to 18 years old, have been somatotyped from high altitude (n = 176) of Ladakh (3,534 m) and low altitude (n = 172) of Kullu Valley (1,500–2,200 m). The results of the study reveal greater mesomorphy and ectomorphy in t…
