Mitochondrial DNA variation and substructure among the tribal populations of Andhra Pradesh, India
We analyzed mtDNA HVR-I variation among six tribal populations-Andh, Pardan, Gond, Naikpod, Kolam and Chenchu--from Andhra Pradesh. These tribes belong to the Dravidian and Indo-European linguistic group. Except for Chenchu, the rest of the tribal samples were collected from two or more than two locations. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) of the sequences yields a significant F(ST) value (0.045), suggesting a fair degree of genetic diff…
Anthropometric affinities among the 20 endogamous groups of Dhangars of Maharashtra, India
Fourteen anthropometric measurements were used to examine the affinities among 20 Dhangar castes of Maharashtra, in a sample of 2437 adult males. The results are interpreted in the light of their ethnohistorical and geographical backgrounds on the one hand and with reference to the affinities observed on the basis of other biological variables, different sets of qualitative and quantitative dermatoglyphic variables and genetic markers, on the oth…
Relevance of Surnames in Population Structure
With the help of demographic data on 2263 couples from the vadde fisherfolkk of Kolleru Lake in Andhra Pradesh, India, an attempt has been made to demonstrate the relevance of surnames in study of population Structure. Preferential mating between surnames is used to ascertain the extent of depatures of random mating, or extent of breeding isolation within a population. besides the number of surnames, a measured called surname diversity index is d…
Principal component of finger ridge-counts
A principal component analysis was carried out on radial and ulnar finger ridge-count data on a sample of fishermen of the sea coast of Puri in the state of Orissa in India. The component structure is very similar to that obtained earlier by Roberts and Coope for some English populations, by Arrieta and Lostao for a Basque population, by Siervogel et al. for a White American population, by Jantz and Hawkinson, and Jantz et al. for American and Af…
Genetic differentiation among four groups of fishermen of the Eastern coast, India
The four endogamous groups of fishermen living around the city of Puri, located on the eastern coast of India, were studied for blood groups, red cell enzymes and serum proteins (11 loci). Only 1.3% of the total diversity among the groups studied is due to differences between them (GST = 0.013). The genetic distances between populations were estimated using Edwards and Cavalli-Sforza's method. The pattern of genetic distance reflects the geograph…
Quantitative palmar dermatoglyphics and the assessment of population affinities
Variation in quantitative dermatoglyphics among three endogamous groups of marine fishermen of Puri Coast, India, is greater for the palmar variables than for the fingers. This is the case in both the sexes. The pattern of population affinities, however, differs for the males and females. In order to evaluate the importance of palmar variables in population studies, the results in males are compared with those of finger variables and anthropometr…
Genetic Significance of the relationship between absolute total finger ridge count and its variability
In order to test the hypothesis of a major gene effect on absolute total finger ridge count (ATFRC), the nature of relationship between mean ATFRC and its variability was evaluated in a series of 47 population samples from India. Regression analysis showed that both the standard deviation and the coefficient of variation are significantly related to mean ATFRC, and about 35% of the variation in ATFRC is explained by the dependent variable coeffic…
Ethnic Variation in Interfinger Correlation of Ridge Counts
Incidence of colour-blindness among the marine fishermen of Puri
475 adult males from three endogamous groups of marine fishermen of Puri were examined for colour blindness using the 15th edition of Ishihara colour-blindness chart. The results are interpreted in the light of Post and Pickford's hypothesis of selection relaxation, and the marine fishermen as a special ecological category
