  • Fifty Years of Luminescence Dating

    Open Access•A G Wintle•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2008•Cited by: 19•References: 216

Luminescence techniques for dating both heated materials (e.g., pottery and burnt stone) and sediments have gone through three phases in the past 50 years. The first 22 years, from 1957 to 1979, were devoted to thermoluminescence (TL) techniques applied to heated material. In the next six years, from 1979 to 1985, it was found that TL dating could be applied to sediments. However, the TL signals of both quartz and feldspar grains observed for mod…

  • A new OSL chronology for dust accumulation in the last 130,000 yr for the Chinese Loess Plateau

    Open Access•Y C Lu, Yongcheng Lu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2007

A sensitivity-corrected Multiple Aliquot Regenerative-dose protocol has been developed for fine-grained quartz OSL dating of Chinese loess. Its reliability has been assessed on the basis of the methodology and by dating reference samples of known age close to the transition from the last interglacial paleosol (S 1 ) to the last glacial loess (L 1 ), which corresponds to the Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 5/4 transition. On the basis of the fin…

  • Locating the boundary between the Pleistocene and the Holocene in Chinese loess using luminescence

    Zhongping Lai, Z-P Lai et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006•Cited by: 18•References: 10

A detailed chronology has been obtained for a loess section at Yuanbao, situated at the northwestern edge of the Chinese Loess Plateau. The ages were obtained by the measurement of the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) from coarse-silt-sized quartz grains. These ages showed that deposition at this site was continuous from 17 ka to the present, but that there was a decrease in the sedimentation rate from 0.60 to 0.10 m/ka at 13.489 /1.15 ka,…

  • Optical dating of a scroll-bar sequence on the Klip River, South Africa, to derive the lateral migration rate of a meander bend

    Open Access•Helena Rodnight, Geoff A T Duller et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Cited by: 10•References: 6

Problems are often encountered in accurately establishing the rates of processes associated with river channel change. In this study, optical dating was used to obtain the lateral migration rate of an abandoned meander bend on the Klip River, eastern Free State, South Africa. Five samples were collected by augering along a transect across an approximately 200-m-wide scroll-bar sequence on the inner meander bend, and an additional sample was colle…

  • Luminescence dating of recent dunes on Inch Spit, Dingle Bay, southwest Ireland

    Open Access•A G Wintle, Michèle L Clarke et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1998•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Fifteen samples of dune sand, and three samples from a core taken in the beach face, were collected from a sand spit which protrudes into Dingle Bay in Southwest Ireland. The potassium-rich feldspar grains from the samples were dated using a single aliquot luminescence protocol for infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) signals. No ages over 600 years were obtained, which demonstrates the youth of the dune forms currently observed. The youngest …

  • Evaluation of luminescence-dating procedures applied to late-Holocene colluvium near St Paul's Mission, Natal, South Africa

    Open Access•A G Wintle, S H Li et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1995•Cited by: 3

Colluvial deposits provide an interesting challenge for luminescence-dating techniques because of the short and varied light-exposure histories of the grains prior to deposition. Results of thermoluminescence (TL) and infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) measurements are presented for two stacked colluvial deposits from Natal. A radiocarbon date for bulk organic matter in the A horizon of the soil formed within the surface of the lower unit pr…

Over the last seventy years, European hominid fossils and associated archaeological remains have been dated by reference to the classical, fourfold glacial/interglacial subdivision of the Pleistocene. This method seemed relatively straightforward and precise especially as new discoveries were fitted into the schemes, apparently strengthening the correlations and increasing their validity. However, recent studies of deep-sea cores and terrestrial …
