Chinese Ideas and American Politics
In his article "Chinese Ideas and American Politics: Confucius as a Guideline for Leadership", Alfred Hornung traces the influence of Chinese ideas on American politics with a focus on the works of Confucius. The more than 2.500-year-old impact of the Chinese philosopher on public conduct and his pursuit of virtuous perfection has served as a guideline for leadership emanating from China to Europe and America. For this trajectory of ideas, the hi…
Locating New Fields in Transnational American Studies
keynote speaker Shelley Fisher Fishkin reviewed the twenty-year history of the innovative concept which she launched at the American Studies Association convention in Atlanta in 2003.While she expressed her own fascination about the astonishing productivity of her research project, she also stated that it had only passed its teens and was yet young.Reviewing the contributions to this issue we can call it-without exaggeration but with pride-foreve…
Transnational American Studies and Life Narratives
Introduction to the issue by the journal's editor in chief
Jack London’s Medical Migrations to a Pan-Pacific Alliance
Jack London’s life and career represent an exemplary case for the interrelation of transnational American Studies and medical humanities. In the short period of the forty years of his life he traveled the world and encountered a great number of illnesses and diseases, those of others and his own, from his infancy in 1876 to his premature death in 1916. Although he was born in San Francisco and died on his ranch in the Sonoma Valley of California,…

The Need to Transnationalize
Figurational Life Writing and Indigenous Lives in the Rain Forests of the Americas
Norbert Elias’s figurational sociology lends itself to an analysis of autobiographies by the Japanese Canadian scientist-ecologist David Suzuki, the ethnographer-sociologist Claude Lévy-Strauss and the humanist Michel de Montaigne. This figurational reading focuses on their contact with Indigenous peoples in the Americas and their transformation of life writing from an individualist Eurocentric perspective to a longed for reversal of Elias’s esta…

Life Writing in and beyond the Anglophone World
Life writing and life-writing studies today seem to be closely connected to people and institutions in Anglophone countries, more specifically in the classical countries of immigration: America, Ca
Out of Life
Migrations of people have influenced the history of humankind from early on. Today, we are experiencing an exodus of people from misery and war-torn regions in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East to the heart of Europe. Edward Said's Out of Place (1999) serves as a foil for the author's discussion of past and present forms of “out-of-life narratives,” which are triggered by and accompany routes of escape in search of refuge and rescue. The author's…
Ecology and Life Writing in Transnational and Transcultural Perspective
Maoism and Postmodernism
In this essay I discuss the emergence of the Mao cult during the Cultural Revolution in China and its appropriation in cultural revolutions in Europe and the United States to show how this image resonated with similar cults of popular icons in the West and lent itself to the formulation of theories and practices of postmodernism. The image quality of these cults facilitated the rise of the Mao-craze in the late 1980s and 1990s when political pop …
The German Generations and Gender Survey
This paper validates the fertility histories of the German Generations and Gender Survey (GGS). Focusing on the cohorts 1930-69 of West German women, the total number of children, the parity distribution and the parity progression ratios are compared to external sources. One major result from this validation is that the German GGS understates the fertility for the older cohorts and overstates it for the younger ones. We presume that two mechanism…
Symposium
The following set of essays consists of revised versions of contributions read at, or prepared for, a roundtable discussion at the 2009 convention of the American Studies Association in Washington, DC. The short contributions by the individual authors reflect on the boundaries, the perspectives, and the transdisciplinary dynamics of the field imaginary of transnational American Studies and the specific political role of new notions of citizenship…

Transnational American Studies
Entering the United States for the annual meeting of the ASA was a new experience this time. An atmosphere of rigid control surrounded the procedure of passing through immigration and customs in the era of digital fingerprints and instant photographs. The official representative of the United States, who enforced these new requirements of the Homeland Security Office, asked the usual question about the purpose of my visit. My answer, "to attend t…

German Contributions to Autobiography Studies
The Political Uses of Popular Fiction in the Muckraking Movement
