Indian Ideology in The Warpath: Lehman Brightman’s Red Power Journalism
The Warpath, the “angry Indian” newsletter founded by the militant but oft overlooked journalist Lehman Brightman, was one of several Red Power publications founded in the late 1960s as part of the social and cultural upheavals of that era. Brightman’s publication deployed several major themes as he argued for Native American rights and against the federal Indian bureaucracy, especially “America’s colonial office,” the Bureau of Indian Affairs. I…

Indians Illustrated: The Image of Native Americans in the Pictorial Press
In the second half of the nineteenth century, Americans swarmed to take in a raft of new illustrated journals and papers. Engravings and drawings of "buckskinned braves" and "Indian princesses" proved an immensely popular attraction for consumers of publications like Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper and Harper's Weekly. This book charts a social and cultural history of Native American illustrations-romantic, violent, racist, peaceful, and oth…

Family size and religious denomination in Northern Ireland
Some initial results from the recently conducted Northern Ireland Fertility Survey are examined with particular reference to the relationship between family size and religious denomination. While the overall average family size of Roman Catholics is still larger than that of non-Catholics, the extent of this differential is now narrowing as a result of the more rapid recent decline in the average size of Catholic families. In addition, there are …
Ideal family size in Northern Ireland
Data from a survey of 1699 currently (once) married males are used in examining ideal family size in Northern Ireland, an area where fertility remains quite high by west European standards. Although there are several problems concerning the measurement and use of ideal family size, an analysis of the Northern Irish data indicates that the responses appear to be valid. For example, most respondents can formulate an ideal family size in numerical t…
Regional variations in family size in the Republic of Ireland
Date from the Census Fertility Reports are used to investigate social and regional variations in family size in the Republic of Ireland. Although Ireland is noted for its high level of fertility, average family size declined by approximately 10% between 1946 and 1971. There are distinct socioeconomic variations in family size in that Roman Catholic family size is greater than that of non-Catholics and the middle classes have the smallest families…
Recent characteristics of Roman Catholic fertility in Northern and Southern Ireland
In this study census and vital registration data are used to analyse and compare Roman Catholic fertility in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. While Roman Catholic fertility is relatively high in both areas the birth rate amongst Roman Catholics has been generally higher in Northern Ireland than in the Republic. This difference, which was particularly marked in 1961, can be attributed to the higher levels of marital fertility and nupt…
