Integrated approaches to understanding animal exploitation and dairying in the Central European Early Neolithic
Recent genetic studies point towards 6 th millennium BC central Europe as the core region for the emergence of the lactase persistence (LP) gene mutation -13,910 * T, making it important to understand the intensity of milk production and consumption among Linearbandkeramik (or LBK) farming groups. However, it is not known if milking was part of the LBK Neolithic “package” from the start, or if it displayed a discontinuous pattern in time and spac…
Generation of Two New Radiocarbon Standards for Compound-Specific Radiocarbon Analyses of Fatty Acids From Bog Butter Finds
The analysis of processing standards alongside samples for quality assurance in radiocarbon ( 14 C) analyses is critical. Ideally, these standards should be similar both in nature and age to unknown samples. A new compound-specific approach was developed at the University of Bristol for dating pottery vessels using palmitic and stearic fatty acids extracted from within the clay matrix and isolated by preparative capillary gas chromatography. Obta…
Breaking away
Characterising the Neolithic in Britain and Ireland has always been a lively pursuit. Following the referendums on Scottish independence and Brexit, and the consequent shifts in modern cultural and political identities, research into the first farming communities of these islands and their tangled traditions assumes particular resonance. The two volumes under review explore Neolithic identities in Scotland: the first, a festschrift for Gordon Bar…

The house and group identity in the Irish Neolithic

The house and group identity in the Irish Neolithic
A connection is frequently made between the arrival of farming in Ireland and the beginnings of domestic life 'proper', i.e., the foundation of a permanent or semipermanent base around which activities and events relating to the agricultural year are focused. The appearance in the archaeological record of substantial timber buildings associated with early Neolithic ceramics, lithics and food waste would on first inspection seem to bear this out.Em…
