The secret is quartz
A group of a well-known polychrome glazed ceramic, widespread in the western Mediterranean in the eleventh and first half of the twelfth centuries, has been analysed for the first time using Optical Microscopy (OM) and a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), in order to shed some light on the materials, production technology and provenance, about which there are various hypotheses. T…
Continuity and innovation in glazed tableware consumption in North Africa from the Fatimid to Zirid periods
Excavations in the former Roman port of Utica (North Tunisia) by the University of Oxford and the INP (Tunisie) have revealed an area of medieval Islamic houses in the area of the Roman forum. Stratified sequences of pottery have established four main phases of occupation which would appear to span the mid-10th to mid-11th century. The range of glazed wares and other classes of pottery is summarised per phase and a detailed study of the glaze tec…

The introduction of the glaze in al-Andalus
This research develops a much-needed approach to the study of glazed ware production in al-Andalus (Muslim Spain and Portugal) during the early Middle Ages. The introduction of glaze to the Iberian Peninsula was a long and complex process involving three waves of technology transfer arriving from the eastern Islamic regions between the ninth and eleventh centuries. In this paper, the main glaze workshops of each technological wave have been chara…
The transition from lead transparent to tin-opacified glaze productions in the western Islamic lands
Cerámica vidriada de época emiral en Córdoba
This paper is a first approximation to the glazed ceramic from Cordova (Spain) from Emirate phase. Firstly, there is a summary of a few findings exhumed and published in Cordova. Then, a study of a very interesting ceramic assemblage is presented due to it being a closed context, dated to the late 9th or early 10th centuries. The importance of this discovery lies in the quality of the pieces and the variety in their forms and decorations. Some of…
