  • The unaccounted costs of slash pile burning

    Open Access•Caleb E Axlund, Jordan F Suter et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2025

Slash pile burning is a commonly used practice for disposing of unmerchantable forest residues resulting from forest thinning and timber harvest to lower wildfire intensity and risk, but can also generate significant greenhouse gas (GHG) and particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) emissions. These effects of pile burning generate costs that are rarely taken into account in forest management budgets, expenses that could significantly affect decision-making i…

  • Why do normative encounter standards change? The social evolution of recreational crowding

    Walter F Kuentzel, Thomas A Heberlein et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Why do recreational carrying capacity standards change over time? When shared evaluative standards change at a recreational destination, what are the social processes that might lead people to evaluate “how many is too many” differently over time? This study examined how 24-year changes in personal, social, and experiential characteristics of boaters at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore were related to changes in their evaluation of encounte…

  • An Integrated Social, Economic, and Ecologic Conceptual (Iseec) Framework for Considering Rangeland Sustainability

    William E Fox, Daniel W Mccollum et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Currently, there is no standard method to assess the complex systems in rangeland ecosystems. Decision makers need baselines to create a common language of current rangeland conditions and standards for continued rangeland assessment. The Sustainable Rangeland Roundtable (SRR), a group of private and public organizations and agencies, has created a forum to discuss rangeland sustainability and assessment. The SRR has worked to integrate social, e…

  • The Net Economic Value of Day Use Cross Country Skiing in Vermont

Daniel W Mccollum, Alphonse Gilbert et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•1990•References: 1

The net economic value placed on cross country skiing by participants is estimated using survey data from several sites in Vermont. Estimates are obtained using a dichotomous choice contingent valuation mechanism in a logit model. Values are presented both in terms of the mean value and median value. The highest values are obtained at sites in or near the Green Mountain National Forest

  • A benefit-cost analysis of amniocentesis

    Ralph L Andreano, Daniel W Mccollum•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1983•References: 10

This study applies benefit‐cost analysis to one area of prenatal diagnosis— amniocentesis. The ultimate purpose of such a study is to provide useful guidelines to policy makers. An attempt is made to exhaustively list benefits and costs, whether measurable or not. Those which can be quantified are estimated. On the basis of these benefit‐cost estimates, the study concludes that a program of amniocentesis for all pregnant women beyond age 32 would…
