Prevalence and causes of anemia among older adults in India
Anemia among older adults aged ≥ 60 years is a well-described risk factor that increases the risk of falls, cardiovascular diseases, and mortality. In India, objectively measured national estimates of anemia prevalence and the causes of anemia among older adults are lacking. The Harmonized Diagnostic Assessment of Dementia for the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI-DAD) collected venous blood samples from a nationally representative sample o…
Methodological considerations of diet assessment of the older Indian population in the longitudinal aging study in India—Harmonised Diagnostic Assessment of Dementia (Lasi-DAD)
The LASI-DAD FFQ proved to be a good tool for dietary data collection from a diverse, older Indian population. It is a single, comprehensive questionnaire adapted to the diverse dietary habits of older Indian population factoring in socio-economic, geographic, cultural, religious and seasonal variations, and it will help explore potential associations between diet and late-life cognition in older Indians
Harmonization of four biomarkers across nine nationally representative studies of older persons
INTRODUCTION: A growing number of international population surveys have included measurement of biomarkers, but differ in the type of specimens collected, sample processing procedures, shipment protocols, and laboratory assay platforms. The purpose of this study is to harmonize biomarker data from nine nationally representative studies of people 50 years of age and over by adjusting for assay platforms and type of specimens for total cholesterol …
The association between BMI and cognition in India
Underweight BMI is a risk factor for poor cognitive outcomes in adults 45 years and older and may be indicative of poor nutritional status and life-course disadvantage in India. In tandem with existing literature, supplemental analyses and effect modification results indicate that unmeasured confounding and reverse causation may explain the observed positive associations between overweight and obese BMI and cognitive functioning from cross-sectio…
Links Between Mortality and Socioeconomic Characteristics, Disease Burden, and Biological and Physical Functioning in the Aging Chinese Population
The results show that the objectively measured indicators of physical functioning and biomarkers are independent and strong predictors of mortality risk after accounting for several additional self-reported health measures, confirming the value of incorporating biological and performance measurements in population health surveys to help understand health changes and aging processes that lead to mortality. This study also highlights the importance…
Ascertaining cause of mortality among middle-aged and older persons using computer-coded and expert review verbal autopsies in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study
BACKGROUND: Verbal autopsy is designed to ascertain causes of death that are not registered or certified. Verbal autopsy has been validated in multiple settings but has not been as widely evaluated for older populations as for younger age groups. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to provide empirical evidence of the value of verbal autopsy interviews in the context of population-based surveys of older adults by comparing the cause-of-death assignments d…
Methodological considerations in designing and implementing the harmonized diagnostic assessment of dementia for longitudinal aging study in India (Lasi-DAD)
The Harmonized Diagnostic Assessment of Dementia for Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI-DAD) is a population-representative, prospective cohort study of late-life cognition and dementia. It is part of an ongoing international research collaboration that aims to measure and understand cognitive impairment and dementia risk by collecting a set of cognitive and neuropsychological assessments and informant reports, referred to as the Harmonized …
HPLC-based Measurement of Glycated Hemoglobin using Dried Blood Spots Collected under Adverse Field Conditions
Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) assays with venous blood and dried blood spots (DBS) are compared for 143 paired samples collected in Aceh, Indonesia. Relative to gold-standard venous-blood values, DBS-based values reported by the HPLC are systematically upward biased for HbA1c<8% and the fraction diabetic (HbA1c ≥ 6.5%) is overstated almost five-fold. Inspection of chromatograms from DBS a…
Validation and modification of dried blood spot‐based glycosylated hemoglobin assay for the longitudinal aging study in I ndia
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to validate a modified dried blood spot (DBS)-based glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) assay protocol, after a pretest in India showed poor correlation between the original DBS-based protocol and venous results. METHODS: The original protocol was tested on different chemistry analyzers and then simplified at the University of Washington (UW). A second pretest was conducted in India to validate the modified assay protocol,…
Education, gender, and state-level disparities in the health of older Indians
Using new biomarker data from the 2010 pilot round of the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI), we investigate education, gender, and state-level disparities in health. We find that hemoglobin level, a marker for anemia, is lower for respondents with no schooling (0.7g/dL less in the adjusted model) compared to those with some formal education and is also lower for females than for males (2.0g/dL less in the adjusted model). In addition, we f…
External Quality Control for Dried Blood Spot-Based C-Reactive Protein Assay
Measurement of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation, in dried blood spots has been increasingly incorporated into community-based social surveys internationally. Although the dried blood spot-based CRP assay protocol has been validated in the United States, it remains unclear whether laboratories in other less-developed countries can generate CRP results of similar quality. We therefore conducted external quality monitoring for drie…

The Associations Between Socioeconomic Status, Allostatic Load and Measures of Health in Older Taiwanese Persons
Data from a national representative sample of 1023 elderly and near-elderly Taiwanese were used to explore whether allostatic load is associated with health outcomes and mediates the association between socioeconomic status and health in a non-Western population. The information collected included: demographic characteristics; allostatic load scores; socioeconomic status, measured by education and income; health behaviours; health-related variabl…
Relation of Oxytocin to Psychological Stress Responses and Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenocortical Axis Activity in Older Women
Objective: Animal research suggests that oxytocin (OT) plays a role in stress responses and that in females, this role is modulated by estrogen. Yet little is known about the relation of OT to human stress responses. This study was conducted to examine the relations between estrogen activity and OT, identify stressors distinctively associated with elevations in OT, and investigate whether OT is related to cardiovascular and hypothalamic-pituitary…
Relationship Between Subjective Social Status and Measures of Health in Older Taiwanese Persons
Objectives: To compare the association between subjective ladder ranking and health measures with the association between objective indices and health measures in older Taiwanese men and women. Design: Cross‐sectional study. Setting: A population‐representative sample of elderly and nearly elderly men and women in Taiwan. Participants: The study included 991 participants from the Social Environment and Biomarkers of Aging Study in Taiwan. Measure…
Effects of Managed Care on the Length of Time That Elderly Patients Spend With Physicians During Ambulatory Visits
The effects of managed care on the duration of ambulatory visits by elderly patients appear to be related to the structure of the managed care plan rather than managed care reimbursement per se
