The Impact of Recent Policy Changes on Fertility, Abortion, and Contraceptive Use in Romania
A national household survey of 4,861 women aged 15-44 on reproductive health issues was conducted in Romania in 1993. The survey provided the opportunity to study the impact of policy changes by comparing selected aspects of fertility, abortion, and contraceptive use before and after the December 1989 revolution, when the laws restricting abortion and contraceptive use were abolished. After abortion became legal, the total fertility rate dropped …
Unintended pregnancy and sex education in Chile
This study analysed factors associated with unintended pregnancy among adolescent and young adult women in Santiago, Chile. Three variations of a behavioural model were developed. Logistic regression showed that the effect of sex education on unintended pregnancy works through the use of contraception. Other significant effects were found for variables reflecting socioeconomic status and a woman's acceptance of her sexuality. The results also sug…
Premarital Sexual Activity and Contraceptive Use in Santiago, Chile
The Santiago Young Adult Reproductive Health Survey was conducted in 1988 to examine the sexual behavior of and contraceptive use among young adults in Chile. The survey was based on multistage household probability samples of 865 women and 800 men aged 15-24 who were living in Santiago in 1988. Findings show that 35 percent of females and 65 percent of males had had premarital intercourse. Among those who had done so, the median age at first exp…
Fertility and Family Planning in Jordan
The 1985 Jordan Husbands' Fertility Survey (JHFS) was designed to assess husbands' attitudes and behavior toward fertility and family planning. The 1985 JHFS was a follow-up survey to obtain data from husbands of women who were currently married in the 1983 Jordan Fertility and Family Health Survey (JFFHS). The results from the 1985 JHFS point to the usefulness of collecting fertility and family planning information from husbands. These findings …

We examined pregnancy rates and birth rates among United States teenagers aged 15 to 19 years in 1974, 1980, and 1983. Pregnancy rate refers to live births plus induced abortions per 1000 women; birth rate refers to live births per 1000 women. We present these rates for all teens aged 15 to 19 years and for teens aged 15 to 19 years who were sexually experienced. Data sources included National Center for Health Statistics birth records, Centers f…
Contraceptive Use and Fertility in Paraguay, 1987
In 1987, 38 percent of married Paraguayan women aged 15-44 were practicing contraception, with oral contraceptives being the most prevalent method. Fertility rates for the population were at corresponding levels, with an overall fertility rate of 5.4 births per woman. Fertility has not changed substantially for the nation as a whole since 1979, and contraceptive use has increased by only 6 percentage points. Findings from the present study are co…
Changes in contraceptive use and fertility
From 1976 to 1984 important demographic changes occurred in Panama. The total fertility rate declined from 4.5 to 3.7, and contraceptive use amongmarried women 20–44 years of age increased from 55 per cent to 63 per cent. However, using data from three national level reproductive health surveys which were conducted in Panama in 1976, 1979, and 1984, we found that most of the changes took place between 1976 and 1979. Since 1979, overall contracept…
Side effects and discontinuation of oral contraceptive use in southern Brazil
The subsequent contraceptive behaviour following reported side effects in users of oral contraceptives in the southern region of Brazil is examined in relation to discontinuation of pill use, changing to other methods, termination of contraceptive use, the role of the physician in influencing a woman's decision to discontinue pill use, and discontinuation according to the type of problem experienced. In 2904 currently married women, aged 15–44, a…
Family Planning in Jordan
Data from the 1983 fertility survey in Jordan indicate that 26 percent of married women were using contraceptives, reflecting a very small relative increase in use in the seven years before the survey. Only 5 percent of nonusers stated that they desired to use a method. Other data from the same survey suggest a potential demand for contraception, for spacing as well as limiting births, among those not using. For example, many recent pregnancies w…

Impact of Accessibility of Contraceptives on Contraceptive Prevalence in Guatemala
The 1978 National Survey of Fertility, Family Planning, and Communication of Guatemala provided the opportunity to study the effect of accessibility to contraceptive source on contraceptive prevalence. Guatemala's 2 ethnic groups are the Ladinos and the Indians. Demographic characteristics were represented by age of woman, number of living children, and desire for more children. Socioeconomic characteristics were educational status, urban-rural r…
Family Planning Communications and Contraceptive Use in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Panama
Recent contraceptive prevalence surveys in Guatemala, El Salvador, and panama included a module on family planning communications. This module provided useful feedback on the reach of each program and facilitated comparisons between countries. While almost all women in El Salvador have been reached by family planning messages, the percentage of women reached was lower in Panama and Guatemala. In all three countries rural, less educated, and unemp…
Contraceptive Use and Fertility in the Republic of Panama
Panama has a high prevalence of contraception, with surgical sterilization being the dominant method. Use of contraception is fairly high even in rural areas. Seventy-one percent of users named a public sector source for their contraception. High use of contraception is part of an overall program of public sector maternal and child health services that also shows substantial penetration of rural areas. The high reliance on public sector sources i…

Determinants of fertility in Guatemala
The 1978 Contraceptive Prevalence Survey for Guatemala provides an opportunity to examine fertility levels and a number of determinants of fertility for three broad segments of the country: the Department of Guatemala and, in the remainder of the country, the Ladino and Indian populations. While Ladinos had a much higher rate of contraceptive use than did Indians, the two groups had similar birth rates. The lack of difference in fertility appears…
Contraceptive Use and Demographic Trends in El Salvador
El Salvador has the highest population density in Central America and, with the exception of some Caribbean islands, the highest in the entire western hemisphere. Moreover, with an annual growth rate of around 3.0 percent, the population could well double by the end of the century. Concern over the country's population growth and attendant economic and social problems led to the formulation of a national population policy in 1974 that made popula…
