  • Airborne infection prevention and control implementation

Open Access•Helene‐Mari van der Westhuizen, Sarah Tonkin-Crine et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2024

There are many examples of poor TB infection prevention and control (IPC) implementation in the academic literature, describing a high-risk environment for nosocomial spread of airborne diseases to patients and health workers. We developed a positive deviant organisational case study drawing on Weick's theory of organisational sensemaking. We focused on a district hospital in the rural Eastern Cape, South Africa and used four primary care clinics…

  • Crying, Moving, and Keeping It Whole

Elspeth Jajdelska, Christopher Butler et al.•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 34

Vividness is used in a range of senses which often conflate the intensity of an experience with the accuracy of mental images. In this article we consider the vividness of responses to literary descriptions of faces in the light of the psychology of face perception and the neuroscience of the mirror neuron system. We distinguish between intensity of experience and accuracy of mental images and compare two models of reader response to descriptions…

  • Asymmetry, Parity, and (Civil) War

    Christopher K Butler, Christopher Butler et al.•ARTICLE•International Interactions•2009•Cited by: 36•References: 14

The concept of relative power is ubiquitous and long-held in understanding conflict. As a ratio of the weaker side's capabilities compared to the stronger side's capabilities, relative power ranges from extreme asymmetry (where the weaker side has almost no capabilities) to parity (where the capabilities of the two sides are equal). Power theories link relative power to international outcomes, especially armed conflict. In this essay, we examine …

  • Postmodernism

    Christopher Butler, Chris C Butler•BOOK•Postmodernism•2003

How can postmodernism be defined? Postmodernism: A Very Short Introduction challenges and explores the key ideas of postmodernists, and their engagement with theory, literature, the visual arts, film, architecture, and music. A artists, intellectuals, critics, and social scientists are treated 'as if they were all members of a loosely constituted and quarrelsome political party' — a party which includes such members as Cindy Sherman, Salman Rushd…

  • Recollections of Patrick Blackett 1945-70 1

    Open Access•Christopher Butler•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•1999

The author was privileged to work closely with Patrick Blackett from 1945 over a continuous period of 25 years, first at Manchester University and later at Imperial College, London. In 1945, Blackett returned to Manchester determined to build up his Department of Physics, both undergraduate numbers and the volume of research. He believed passionately that in Britain a satisfactory and effective volume of research in a department could only be ach…

  • On the Rivalry of Norms for Interpretation

    Christopher Butler, Chris C Butler•ARTICLE•New Literary History•1988

N THIS ESSAY I want to ask what happens when interpreters disagree. For when confronted by the same text, they notoriously come up with divergent constructions placed upon it, and these divergencies reveal different values. Take as a simple example the following couple of lines from Paradise Lost, in which Milton describes the devils in Hell shrinking: Thus incorporeal spirits to smallest forms / Reduced their shapes immense, and were at large.' …

  • What Is a Literary Work

    Christopher Butler, Chris C Butler•ARTICLE•New Literary History•1973

NY CRITIC or critical theorist, particularly if he is concerned with evaluation, which presupposes some account of the objects it L evaluates, must be in a position to, accept or reject some description of his subject matter. But the difficulty for most critics, who are after all quite familiar with a large number of individual instances of works in historical series, lies in giving some general specification which will be critically useful. They…

  • The Unity of the Church

    Open Access•Christopher Butler, Chris C Butler•ARTICLE•Blackfriars•1950

The question of the reintegration of Christendom has been brought before the public of this country recently by an article and a series of letters in The Times, and before the whole world by the Holy Father's address on Christmas Eve. I hope that some of the following remarks may help to explain to non-Catholics why it is that we Catholics do not seem to be able to join in whole-heartedly with some of the attempts that are made from time to time …

  • St. Luke's Debt to St. Matthew

    Open Access•Christopher Butler, Chris C Butler•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1939

The argument pursued in these pages is based, substantially, not on theories of Christian development to which it has been sought to bring the literary data into conformity, but on a direct application to those data of general principles of comparative documentary criticism. It may be worth while to state some of those principles in their generalized form: 1. Where two or more documents correspond in contents, order and language beyond the degree…
