Emotions Online
Digital technologies and new ways of organising transform the way we experience work. This paper seeks to contribute to our understanding of the role of digital emotional labour (EL) among knowledge workers. We investigate the EL involved in digital communication practices among co-located knowledge workers employed in an agile IT-consultancy firm with a relatively flat hierarchy. Based on rich qualitative data, we analyse how the specific socio-…
Feeling like a bad investment
How do young unemployed people experience being the object of social investment (SI) technologies in the public employment services (PES) in the Danish welfare state? Based on 39 in-depth interviews with young unemployment benefit recipients, I explore how they experience and relate to SI technologies thus filling an urgent gap in the literature linking the policy level concretely to subjective experiences. SI technologies are employed to improve…

Emotional status and emotional labour
Working for Roskilde Festival is a dream come true for most of the employees there. In this paper, we apply Hochschild’s theoretical framework of emotional labour (EL) supplemented with recent contributions from affect theory which enables us to shed light on EL experienced by casualised and tenured professionals, respectively. Drawing on rich qualitative we contribute to making clearer how differences in work conditions are associated with diffe…
Planning for a Job
Like most OECD countries, unemployed people in Denmark have been subject to activation policies imbued with rights and obligations for decades. However, during the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, activation and conditionality were temporarily suspended. This article explores what happens to the experience of unemployment when part of the system is put on hold. Based on in-depth interviews conducted during the COVID-19 crisis with 25 unempl…
Hard/heart worker
Purpose The paper seeks to illuminate the intersection between doing greater good in the world and the self-disciplining that comes along with it. The paper raises a discussion on how purpose-driven organizations with a sustainability focus should be concerned about internal social sustainability in order to maintain consistency between external purpose and internal well-being of employees. Design/methodology/approach This article investigates th…
Being wrong the right way
This article examines how three transmasculine persons are subjectified in the Danish treatment system. Based on a multiple case study with three transmasculine persons, we analyse how the treatment system encourages them to perform a more traditional masculinity in order to be culturally intelligible and in order to be assessed as being eligible for treatment. We explore the struggle of subjectivity embedded in these practices. By investigating …
Shame and passion
This study investigates how young, well-educated, unemployed people are governed and how they govern themselves through affective capacities, focusing here on shame and passion. The empirical material consists of field observations made at an unemployment fund and in-depth interviews with 33 young unemployed people in the Danish welfare state. Inspired by governmentality studies including recent contributions concerning affectivity, I analyse how…
Imagining a better future
In this paper, we investigate how young unemployed people make sense of their situation in the face of adversity. Drawing on Cultural Life Course Theory and a new line of research on imagination, this multiple-case study examines the role of imagination for young unemployed people. Based on three in-depth interviews with young academics, we find that the ability to imagine a better future is pivotal for these young people in dealing with unemploy…
Strategic self-management
Individualization has been a much debated topic in youth research for decades now. Getting a good education and choosing the right one is one of the manifold ways young people deal with late-modern individualization challenges. Based on in-depth interviews with 12 young students aged 17–20 years in the Danish Gymnasium we investigate how young people make sense of, and deal with, these challenges by focusing on how they handle and reflect on thei…
Governing homo economicus
In this article, I examine how young unemployed people deal with the risk of unemployment in the Danish welfare state, focusing on two main issues. I examine the technologies currently being used in the unemployment system to manage youth unemployment and I explore how the young unemployed people who are the subject of these technologies understand and react to them. I also consider the affective work, which underpins these technologies and the w…
Unemployed by choice
The Danish welfare system inadvertently provides a good opportunity for young creative people to pursue their dreams in creative fields such as art, acting, music while being on unemployment benefits. As Michael, one of the participants, puts it: ‘I consider unemployment benefit entrepreneurial support’. The subversive practice is illegal. This qualitative study investigates how young unemployed people who choose to be unemployed in order to enga…
