  • Bias in GenAI

Open Access•Yiqiong Zhang, Lynde Tan et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics and Education•2026

GenAI outputs exhibit recurring discursive tendencies of positivity in representations of culturally and linguistically responsive teaching (CLRT), with ChatGPT commonly construing CLRT through a depoliticised, “feel-good” multicultural frame, and Ernie Bot more often articulating harmony-centred representations. • While ChatGPT explicitly acknowledges the possibility of bias, its outputs tend to treat visual representations as self-evidently inc…

  • A discursive history of platform capitalism

    Open Access•Yiqiong Zhang, Susan C Herring et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2026

Discursive tensions accompanying platform commercialization and governance have been overlooked in prevailing platform development models. This article advances a critical, discourse-oriented platform historiography by demonstrating how longitudinal shifts in graphicon use (kaomojis, emojis, and stickers) can be used to trace dimensions of platform development that are not captured in existing historiographic accounts. A mixed-methods analysis of…

  • Manufacturer-driven or platform-driven

    Open Access•Hongshuai Han, Yiqiong Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Futures•2025•References: 1

Platform-driven green innovation presents an intriguing business model that enables manufacturers to offer environmentally friendly products. This paper examines the competition between a green product and a non-green product, both sold through a retail platform. It explores two scenarios: green innovation driven by the manufacturer or by the platform. Based on chaos theory, the equilibrium solutions and their asymptotic stability conditions are …

  • From compensation to competition

    Open Access•Yiqiong Zhang, Susan C Herring et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse & Communication•2023

This study examines the impact of graphicons (emoticons, emojis, and stickers) on the use of sentence-final particles (SFPs) in Chinese based on a 13-year longitudinal corpus of 941,020 comments posted on the popular Chinese social media platform Bilibili. Quantitative analysis shows that graphicon frequencies increase while SFP frequencies decrease over time, and that the correlation between these two trends is statistically significant. However…

  • An analysis of Chinese preservice physical education teachers’ attitudes toward school-based fitness testing in physical education settings

Xiaofen D Keating, Rachyl Stephenson et al.•ARTICLE•Physical Education and Sport…•2021

Background: For over six decades, in many countries, youth fitness testing has been seen as a critical component of physical education programs. As such, preservice physical education teachers (PPETs) must be trained appropriately for effective youth fitness testing, with careful consideration dedicated to PPETs perceptions, since many purported attitudes to have an effect on behavior (Ajzen 1985. “From intentions to actions: A theory of planned …

  • Retailing science

    Yiqiong Zhang•ARTICLE•Text and Talk•2018

This study explores how marketing and science rhetoric have become entrenched in online science news stories. The schematic structures of a corpus of 270 news stories from three types of website (university websites, the websites of Futurity.org and MSNBC.com) have been analyzed and compared. An eight-move structure identified from the corpus suggests that the genre of news stories is a hybridization of promotional discourse for marketization and…

  • Visual forms of address in social media discourse

    Yiqiong Zhang, D Machin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Multicultural Discourses•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This paper shows how a multimodal discourse analysis of the changing visual designs of a science news website between 2009 and 2013 can reveal fundamental changes in visual forms of address, which must be acknowledged alongside shifts being observed at the level of linguistic address. Designers deploy design features in a shift from presenting science as official, formal, and authoritative, where communicative style is a monolog, to one which mus…

Using a critical ‘hypermodal approach’ informed by social semiotics, this paper investigates the changing discourses of marketization found on the website of the National University of Singapore over a 14-year period. Analysis of visual-spatial features and action potentials of progressive versions of the site reveals changes in the website functions, first from providing information about resources and expertise to addressing potential students …
