Delivering Bad News in Clinical Performance Examinations
This paper examines how medical students deliver diagnostic information in the context of bad news and how standardized patients (individuals trained to portray patient roles based on case scenarios) respond. Using conversation analysis, we analyze 82 video-recorded consultations from a clinical performance examination at a university in Korea. We identify two distinct ways in which medical students deliver a stage IV colon cancer diagnosis. Firs…
The use of interlocking multi-unit turns in topic shifts
This paper examines multi-unit turns that allow speakers to retrospectively close the prior sequence while prospectively launching a new sequence, which Schegloff (1986) referred to as interlocking organization. Using English telephone conversations as data, we focus on how multi-unit turns are used for topic shifts, and show that interlocking organization operates in conjunction with other phonetic and lexical features, such as increased pitch a…

First, medial students produce em…

Jeffersonian transcription has been refined to both capture and crystallize the interactionally relevant specifics of how such tasks get done. Conversation analytic work …

Questions and Interrogatives
Conversation analysts distinguish between the terms “interrogative” and “question.” Interrogative is a grammatical term describing the syntactic form of a turn at talk. “Question” describes the type of action – requesting information – that a speaker can do. From a conversation analytic perspective, questions project a relevant next action in the form of a response, for which the answerer is accountable. The design of a question can set an agenda…
