Delivering Bad News in Clinical Performance Examinations
This paper examines how medical students deliver diagnostic information in the context of bad news and how standardized patients (individuals trained to portray patient roles based on case scenarios) respond. Using conversation analysis, we analyze 82 video-recorded consultations from a clinical performance examination at a university in Korea. We identify two distinct ways in which medical students deliver a stage IV colon cancer diagnosis. Firs…
Effect of limiting checklist on the validity of objective structured clinical examination
BACKGROUND: The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a cornerstone of medical education that uses a structured approach to assess clinical skills and competency. A well-designed checklist is essential to enhance the validity of OSCE exams. This study aimed to determine whether a clinically discriminatory checklist (CDC) improves the validity of the OSCE compared with an assessment using the thoroughness checklist (TC), with a parti…
Empathy in clinical performance examinations
This paper examines interactional functions of empathic statements in clinical performance examinations by using the method of conversation analysis. In video-recordings of 170 consultations between medical students and standardized patients (individuals trained to play the role of the patient), medical students produce empathic utterances in three sequential positions and accomplish different interactional jobs. First, medial students produce em…
History-Taking Questions During Triage in Emergency Medicine
Triage in emergency medicine is the initial process of assessing and categorizing urgency of patients’ conditions. During triage, nurses elicit patients’ problems and gather additional information through history taking and physical examination. This paper examines ways in which triage nurses construct history-taking questions and manage the task of urgency assessment. In video-recordings of triage interactions at an emergency department in Korea…
Problem Presentation of Injury During Triage in Emergency Care
Research on medical consultation has primarily dealt with illness. In this article, we focus on traumatic injury such as limb breaks, skin lacerations, and so on. Using data from video recordings of triage interactions between providers and patients at an emergency department in Korea, this article examines patients’ problem presentations concerning injury in particular. First, patients may physically show their injury and its visible manifestati…
