Modelling remote barrier detection to achieve free-flowing river targets
Fragmentation caused by artificial barriers is one of the main stressors of rivers worldwide. However, many barrier inventories only record large barriers, which underestimates barrier numbers, and hence fragmentation. Corrected barrier numbers can be obtained via river walkovers, but these are costly and time consuming. We assessed the performance of remote sensing as an alternative to river walkovers for barrier discovery by comparing the numbe…
Reflections from the team: Co‐creating visual media about ecological processes for young people
Many migratory fish populations are declining, threatened by human‐induced pressures such as habitat loss and fragmentation caused by dams, roads, land use change, climate change and pollution. However, public awareness of fish migration and associated human pressures remains limited. It is important to communicate about hard‐to‐see and complex environmental topics and issues, such as fish migration, with young people, who stand to be the most af…
Integrationist reflections on the place of dialogue in our communicational universe: Laying the ghost of segregationism
Roy Harris identifies the “main flaw” in J. L. Austin’s account of language as a “failure to consider to what extent being able to ‘do things with words’ is parasitic on being able to do things without them”. Harris’s comment here serves as a springboard for a critical evaluation of communicational theories based around “talk-in-interaction” or dialogic principles. The primacy thereby given to linguistic interaction arguably entails a mystificati…

The Australian Assistance Plan—Welfare (?) on the Cheap
This paper suggests that the assumptions about popular participation on which the success of the Australian Assistance Plan rests are unrealistic; that the plan is probably primarily concerned with social control and political stability on the social welfare front under changing social conditions; that in any case it is an old rather than a new approach to the problem; that its political attraction of cheapness may well ensure that it will not be…
